The market for voice and internet

services is evolving rapidly, driving a

            seemingly inexhaustible stream of new

            products and services.

For the average business customer it

can be bewildering knowing where to start

to get the best advice on converged voice

and data connectivity and how to use this

to implement solutions, that will really

benefit an enterprise in terms of increased

          productivity and reduced costs.

          Spitfire, an independent supplier

of network services and solutions, has

extensive experience in helping SMEs gain

the best results from the new connectivity

and UC technology. It offers a range

of voice, internet and UC solutions for

          business customers covering broadband,

Ethernet, SIP Trunking and on-site phone

          systems with UC functionality.

Ethernet – the gold standard for

            cloud connectivity

An important driver for change is the

          move to cloud computing applications.

          Many organisations are switching from

          on-premises provision of applications to

off-site applications hosted in the cloud,

termed ‘software as a service’ (SAAS).

To make the cloud work, whether

for voice, data or both, faster and more

          reliable internet connections are required,

either new fibre broadband (VDSL) or the

new generation of Ethernet circuits (lower

cost and faster leased line replacement

          connections).

Ethernet is definitely the gold standard

of high quality Internet connectivity – it

offers significantly faster speeds, at a far

cheaper price. It is excellent for providing

secure and stable internet connections; for

linking multi-site operations – it uses the

same network technology as a local area

network; and for extending a customer

network over Ethernet without the need

for additional routers or IP addressing.

            Less than half the cost

SIP Trunks are a cost-effective alternative

to conventional analogue or digital (ISDN)

lines for connecting a private phone system

to the public telephone network for voice

          communications.

          As an ISDN replacement, Spitfire’s

SIP trunks typically offer business quality,

secure telephony at less than one third the

cost of the monthly rental of an equivalent

ISDN service. As one of the few business

ISPs and fixed line operators to offer a SIP

trunk service, Spitfire offers a complete

end-to-end SIP service via its own network

          infrastructure.

SIP trunks also offer important business

continuity benefits and are ideal as a

disaster recovery solution in the event of

a failure as any number on the Spitfire

network can be forwarded to any other

location, as long as it is connected via a

SIP Trunk or a normal telephone line.

            Hosted telephony cost benefits

The increased bandwidth and reliability of

          broadband connections is also encouraging

businesses to look at the considerable

benefits of hosted telephony, as well as

          cloud computing.

          Spitfire offers a hosted telephony

          service with phone system functionality

          provided remotely. Spitfire SIP

          Communicator only requires SIP compatible

handsets, making the service an extremely

          cost-effective solution. It requires minimal

capital expenditure because billing is based

on a monthly service charge which is tax

deductible and the costs are estimated

to be about 50 per cent less than a

          conventional phone system.

          SIP Communicator offers some

          significant advantages over rival services;

it is designed as an end-to-end service

to guarantee quality of service and calls

are never routed over the public internet,

ensuring that Spitfire remains in control of

all aspects of call quality from end to end.

            Service and support

          In addition to first-rate customer

support services – in a recent Spitfire

customer survey, 90 per cent of those

who responded stated that an issue was

resolved on the first call – Spitfire has

produced a series of video presentations to

          help customers understand the optimum

          connectivity solution for their needs.

These are available on YouTube or at

           The videos explain in

simple terms the Spitfire services portfolio

          and provide introductory guides and
