FOUNTAIN PENS
Pilot V-Pen
Pilot has a vast range of premium
fountain pens, but its affordable,
everyday pen is the disposable V-Pen,
offered in a choice of 7 colours. The
simple, plastic pen is light to hold and
has a viewer window so you can see how
much ink you have left. The ink flows
consistently and the colours are bold,
but if you make a mistake the ink can be
erased with an ink eradicator. The V-Pen
seems like a good place to start for
someone new to fountain pens.
BIC All in One
BIC, well known for its ballpoint pens,
also has fountain pens in its range. The
All In One fountain pen is a cheap,
disposable pen available in blue, black
and red ink. The ink level is clearly visible
through a window on the side so it is
easy to tell when the pen is running
out. It feels similar to the Pilot V-Pen to
write with, though black ink on the BIC
appears slightly duller and fainter.
STABILO EASYbirdy
The STABILO EASYbirdy has been
developed for school children aged 7 and
over to help them improve their writing
skills. The fountain pen is ergonomically
designed especially for left or right-
handers with a non-slip grip zone.
STABILO plans to bring out fountain pens
for adults some time in the future.

Schneider iD
The Schneider iD is a chunky, refillable
fountain pen with a unique design, which
earned it a Red Dot Design Award in
2010. It features an extra large cap with
an oversized chromed clip. The pen has
an ergonomic rubber grip and comes in
right and left handed versions, with the
grip swapped over, making it comfortable
to hold. I like to put the pen lid onto
one end of the pen when writing, but
Schneider iD’s unusually large cap
makes this more difficult. This is only a
minor issue, considering how well the
pen writes. The broad nibbed pen feels
smooth on paper and the ink flows well.

Sheaffer Legacy Heritage
By way of contrast, this is a top of the
range fountain pen. With its 22k gold
plate trim and 18k gold nib the pen
is smart and luxurious. The Sheaffer
Legacy Heritage feels masculine; it is
solid, heavy and is much wider than
the disposable pens – not ideal if you
have small hands like me, but great
if you like a pen with substance.
The nib glides smoothly across the
paper and lays down a lot of ink.
I find this a nuisance as I’m left
handed and tend to smudge my
writing easily, but others may
appreciate the opulence of it.
