Cost savings
The ability to place hundreds of pages
in a machine and walk away also makes
it possible – and economical – for
businesses to do more shredding in-
house.
“Investing in an autofeed shredder
can save companies up to 65% on the
amount you would currently pay out
to outsource shredding,” Crumpler said.
“Another obvious benefit is that there
is much more control over who handles
confidential data than if an outside
organisation is involved.”
Security
To maintain data security, the covers on
some devices are lockable so that no
one can remove pages from the batch
waiting to be shredded.
This feature is offered as an option
on some devices, like the Auto Feeder
for Kobra Touch Screen shredders, which
can be fitted with a Lockable Cover with
a high security, non-duplicable key, and
as a standard feature on others, like the
HSM SECURIO AF150, AF300 and AF500.
The latter incorporate a ‘Lock-and-Go’
function that protects data by saving a
security code unique to each job on a
USB stick. Once shredding has started,
only the owner of the USB device can
unlock the cover and interrupt the
process. Acco uses a security PIN as the
locking/unlocking mechanism on some
of its models.
Lockable covers provide a high degree
of reassurance. However, Crumpler
still recommends having a dedicated
shredder operative where security is
paramount.

practices have cost businesses millions of
pounds that could be turned into profit,

In 2011, Acco introduced the first Rexel
Auto Feed shredder and a new way
to shred paper in offices. Instead of
manually feeding in pages singly or
a few at a time, autofeed shredders
let you place hundreds of pages in a
document container at the top of the
shredder, close the lid and walk away.
The shredder automatically works its
way through the stack while you get on
with other tasks.
Acco’s Rexel Auto Feed shredders
are now its best-selling range and their
success has helped the company increase
its share of the total shredding market
from 5% by value in 2011 to 16% at
the end of 2014 (source: GFK POS data).
Growing demand has encouraged other
manufacturers to launch their own
autofeed shredders, but Acco told

that it still has 90% or more of the
autofeed market.
Rexel autofeed shredders use strong
gripping technology to pull sheets from
the bottom of a stack into the shredding
mechanism. The Auto Feeder for Kobra
shredders from Elcoman works much
more like the automatic document
feeder on a copier, automatically feeding
sheets into the shredding throat one at
a time.
The drawbacks of this approach are
that the feeder has a low capacity – 170
pages compared to 750 on a top-of-the-
range Rexel Auto Feed shredder – and it
is less able to cope with severely creased
or crumpled pages or large stapled
documents.
Impressive growth
What’s impressive about the sales
growth of autofeed devices is that at
a time of cost-cutting customers have
been prepared to pay a premium for
automatic shredding. This suggests
that these devices have real business
benefits.
Productivity
One of the greatest, according to
Sarah Crumpler, marketing manager at
Duplo UK, the UK distributor for IDEAL
shredders, is productivity. “From our own
experience, we know that with autofeed
shredders, workforces can spend up to
98% less time shredding, saving time
and money, and freeing up staff to get
on with other important tasks,” she said.
