LABELLING
The ins and outs
of labelling
Which labelling solution is best for you?
A4 office printer
If you have an office printer or MFP,
you already have all you need to get
labelling.Word processing software
usually comes with templates so
you can design your own labels,
incorporating logos and images if
desired. Then all you have to do is
load the printer with printer-friendly
adhesive sheets and start printing.
You can also find templates online,
as well as software to manage specific
tasks. Fiona Mills, marketing director at
Avery UK, said: “Avery’s Design & Print
Online software offers a quicker, more
convenient way of doing a mail merge and
importing data for shipping and address
labels. Anyone who’s ever had to do a mail
merge in the past will tell you how easily
it can go wrong. So with Avery Design &
Print, we’ve simplified the process and
made creating professional looking labels
so straightforward and easy-to-do.”
One obvious advantage in using an A4
office printer for labelling is that making
use of technology you already have for

another purpose saves money and space
in the office. That said, quality might
not be as good as a dedicated label
printer or professional printing service.
For example, most standard printers are
unable to provide full-bleed printing to
the outside edge of the sheet.
If you do use an A4 office printer for
printing labels, it is important to consider
whether it is an inkjet or laser printer.
As long as you purchase labels that
are compatible with your printer-type,
you should have no problems printing
adhesive labels. Jam-free guarantees
(offered by Avery, for example) provide
further reassurance, but they only apply
for single use printing. Putting a sheet of
labels through a printer a second time
can cause problems and is discouraged
by suppliers.
Inkjet printers are more versatile than
laser printers and can print onto a wider
range of materials – some can print
directly onto CDs and DVDs. However,
even laser printers provide a choice of
label, including see-through and coloured
options. Long-standing concerns about
the waterfastness of inkjet ink have
evaporated as printer manufacturers
have switched to quick drying, durable
pigment-based inks.
Label printer
Small dedicated label printers that print
single labels from a roll one at a time
are a popular alternative to a desktop
printer/A4 label sheet combo. Unlike
office printers, dedicated label printers
are designed specifically to print labels
and consequently produce higher quality
results.
