In 2013, Brother stepped into
uncharted territory with the
launch of the HL-S7000DN mono
inkjet printer. Previously, Brother’s
product range had addressed the
printing/document needs of small
and medium-sized businesses, but,
with print speeds of 100 pages per
minute, the HL-S7000DN is of most
interest to larger businesses and
commercial print providers.
While it can serve as a workgroup
printer in an open plan office, it is most
likely to be used as a centralised device
for ‘quick burst printing’ in enterprise print
and mail rooms, as well as copy shops and
other print-for-pay environments.
The advantages of the HL-S7000DN
over laser devices with comparable print
speeds are clear when it comes to printing
large batches of invoices or thousands of
customer letters. Running costs are very
low thanks to a high capacity, 30,000-page
ink cartridge, which delivers a cost per page
of just 0.5p per page, potentially even 0.3p
or 0.4p if you go down the managed print
services (MPS) route. Because it’s ink, you
don’t need a fuser, so energy levels are one
fifth of a laser device. Furthermore, printed
pages are output at room temperature,
unlike pages printed on laser devices that
can become hot and curl.
Other useful features of the HL-
S7000DN include paper capacities of up
to 2,100 sheets input and 1,100 sheets
output; a powerful 800MHz processor; 2GB
of internal storage; Gigabit Ethernet and
Wireless 802.11n network interfaces; and
an open interface that allows developers to
build customised print applications.
Hoping to broaden the appeal of the
printer, Brother launched two models with
slower print speeds and smaller price
tags in 2015. The range now includes the
HL-S7000DN50, an entry-level 50 page per
minute machine with one paper tray; the
HL-S7000DN70, a 70ppm model with an
additional lower paper tray; and the top-
of-the-range HL-S7000DN, which has print
speeds of 100ppm, plus three additional
paper trays.
Slowing down the engine to create a
range with different prices gives customers
more options to find the machine that best
suits their needs.
