Kodak Alaris has expanded its offering with
a new generation of network scanners
that provide organisations with PC-free,
walk-up scanning for easy document
sharing.
The KODAK Scan Station 700 Series
features a 9.7in, customisable colour
touch screen that enables users to capture
information from documents and route it into
key business processes without the need for a
dedicated PC.
The scanner connects directly to a network
and sends data to multiple destinations
simultaneously, including network drives,
printers, FTP sites, email and Microsoft
SharePoint.
Easy to use and install, the KODAK
Scan Station 700 Series is ideal for smaller
businesses and branch offices. A remote
administration utility enables administrators
to manage, configure and maintain multiple
devices from one central location.
There are two models in the series: the Scan
Station 700 for general use and the 720 EX
model, which includes a built-in fax modem,
KOFAX Front Office Server connectivity and an
architecture that enables integration with highly
specialised third-party business applications.
Both models process 50 pages per minute
and have a recommended daily volume of up
to 6,000 pages per day. They scan in A4, duplex,
colour and can output at resolutions of up to
600 dpi. Kodak Alaris’ Perfect Page technology
automatically adjusts images to maximise
image quality.

Compact A3 scanner
Meeting the need for flexible document
capture, Canon has launched a compact A3
desktop scanner with two document feeding
options, a U-turn and a straight path, enabling
it to handle a wide range of media, from ID
cards to documents up to 3 metres in length.
The imageFORMULA DR-M1060 has fast
colour scan speeds of 60 pages per minute and
advanced image processing features, such as
text enhancement, auto colour detection, page
size detection and deskew, which reduce the
need for editing.
Two paper feed sensors detect feed errors
and instantly stop the scanning process to
avoid damage to a document.
The scanner comes with a suite of
professional software for processing business
documents, including quick connectivity to
SharePoint, PDF-A for long-
term archiving and PDF
editing tools. Optional
accessories include
flatbed scanners
and barcode
modules.

Now available to UK retailers, Youstice is a
new web application that aims to resolve
shopper-vendor disputes in three easy steps
and a couple of clicks.
Customers can submit complaints using a
defined vocabulary that enables the system
automatically to recognise the problem
and suggest an appropriate resolution. For
example, if a customer receives an item
in the wrong size, they can be offered
a replacement and a coupon for a 10%
discount on their next purchase.
Available as a simple plug-in for retailers’
websites, Youstice can improve customer
satisfaction and brand reputation by
helping to resolve customer disputes
quickly and easily, whenever they arise.
Esther Dyson, angel investor and advisory
board member of Youstice, said: “With EU
directives on online dispute resolution taking
effect next year,
online retailers need
to understand them
and react. Youstice
provides a simple and
effective way for them
to do so, using not just technology but a library
of standard restitution practices to reassure
customers that they are being treated fairly.”
PC-free scanning
Xerox has developed secure imaging
technology that enables sensitive financial
documents to be snapped, processed and
delivered securely from a smartphone or
iPhone, potentially speeding up a range of
processes, from loan and mortgage approvals
to money transfer requests.
Safe Courier enables anyone with a
supported mobile device and web access to take
a picture of a document and securely send it to
a recipient in seconds.
Raja Bala, principal imaging scientist at the
Xerox Research Center Webster, said: “We’ve all
used our smartphones to take a quick photo of
documents, white-board meeting notes or even a
snapshot of our child’s science project to record
and share. Safe Courier makes it just as easy to
submit a loan application using your phone as it
is to post a photo online.”
Xerox says that Safe Courier enables clients
to scan and process a much wider variety of
documents than the mobile cheque capture/
deposit applications currently offered by banks,
including loan applications, money transfer
requests, tax documents or account applications.
Imaging technology developed by Xerox lets
users take high quality photos of multi-page
documents without even pressing a button.
The app simply waits for the user to hold the
smartphone camera with a steady hand in front
of the document and automatically knows when
to capture the photo.
The software crops and cleans up captured
pages and stitches them together into a clear
document image for transmission using the
built-in proprietary secure transfer system.
The service can be configured to delete files
from the mobile device once they have been
transmitted.
Everything is delivered through a single
portal, so users can open a link within a text
or email to review and progress financial
transactions. Organisations can send a text
message or email containing a link to request
additional documents at any point in the
process. All the customer has to do is click on
the link, take the picture and send.
