The Western European printer
and MFP market enjoyed its
fourth consecutive quarter of
growth in the first quarter of
2014, with a 7.1% year-on-year
increase in sales, according to
the latest Quarterly Hardcopy
Peripherals Tracker from
International Data Corporation
(IDC).
In the UK, sales grew by
22.4%, with inkjet shipments up
32.1% year-on-year. The market
for laser devices contracted by
1.4%, with only the colour and
monochrome MFP markets
showing growth.
In Western Europe,
shipments reached 5.36 million
units, 350,000 more than in
the same period in 2013. MFPs
now account for 78% of all
shipments.
Market value grew by 1.7%
year-on-year, to $2.66 billion,
fuelled by strong growth in the
colour laser, colour inkjet and
high-speed inkjet segments.
Phil Sargeant, program
director of IDC’s Western
European Imaging Hardware
Devices and Document
Solutions group, said:
“Commercial markets are
showing strong demand for
colour laser products and
business inkjets continue to
exhibit strong growth patterns.
SMB and enterprise customers
are investing in printing and
document management, while
consumer markets also bucked
the trend with higher year-on-
year sales.”
Key findings were:
n
Inkjet markets grew 13.4%
year-on-year, with business
inkjets up 23.6%;
n
The overall laser market
shrank, with the decline in mono
exceeding increases in colour. If
business inkjets are factored in,
the overall commercial or office
markets increased;
n
Total printer sales declined
5.7%, but there were pockets
of growth, such as high-speed
inkjet production and labels and
packaging production;
n
Total MFP shipments
increased 11.3% but
monochrome laser products
declined as the switch to colour
intensified and business inkjets
had an impact;
n
Serial impact dot matrix
markets declined year on year
by 7.9%.

TA opts for strong,
silent type
TA Triumph-Adler (UK)’s new
six-strong A4 mono MFP
range is faster (40-60ppm),
quieter, more durable and
more energy-efficient than its
predecessor.
The use of Solid State Drives
(SSDs), which read data more
quickly than conventional
memory storage, allied to a
more productive engine deliver
output speeds of as much as
60 pages per minute (with the
P-6035i MFP).
For quiet operation in busy
workgroups, the new models
feature a Whisper Mode for
almost silent copying, while
a Private Printing function
that requires PIN or chip card
authentication before releasing
a print job maintains document
confidentiality.
All the new devices are
capable of wireless printing
from and scanning to
smartphones and tablets,
and four of the six have a
HyPAS interface and colour
touchscreen for easy integration
of enterprise document
management solutions.
For specialist applications,
especially in healthcare, the
printers can print (and scan)
small documents down to
A6R using the bypass and/
or standard paper tray. An ID
copy function lets users copy
both sides of a double-sided
document up to A5 onto one
side of A4.
A TEC value 30-50% lower
than previous models helps
organisations reduce their
impact on the environment, as
do the devices’ extended lifetime
and Preventative Maintenance
cycle – 900,000/500,000
pages respectively on
the 40ppm models and
1,000,000/500,000 pages on
the 50 and 60ppm models.
Printer market registers fourth
consecutive quarter of growth
Business injkets with lower
running costs, greater energy
efficiency and faster print
speeds than comparable laser
devices grew strongly in the first
quarter of 2014. New launches
from HP and Epson are likely
to give the market an added
boost in the second half of the
year. These include Epson’s
WorkForce Pro WF-5600 A4
devices and WF-8000 A3+
machines, which have half
the running costs and 80%
lower energy consumption
than comparable colour laser
devices. Meeting the needs of
busy workgroups, the WF-5600
series has print speeds of 20
pages per minute (ISO) for
colour and mono; a duty cycle of
up to 45,000 pages per month;
a 580-sheet paper capacity;
remote setup and custom
settings for multiple printers;
and support for popular security
protocols. The WorkForce Pro
WF-8000, to be launched in
September, brings the benefits
of business inkjet technology to
A3+ printing.
Dodgy designs
One in four UK businesses is
unhappy with the way their
business cards look, according to
a survey of 1,000 businesses by
DesignCrowd. DesignCrowd, which
helps businesses crowdsource
designs and ideas from over
150,000 designers, saw a 357%
increase in business card design
projects in 2013 alone.
