Europe sets the pace in paper recycling
Europe continues to lead the world in paper recycling. The latest monitoring report of the
European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) shows that in 2009 Europe achieved a world record
level of paper recycling of 72.2% comfortably beating the ERPC's 2010 target of 66%. The total
amount recycled in paper mills came to 58 million tonnes.
Commenting on the achievement, ERPC secretary Jori Ringman said: “The economic recession
continued in 2009 and made paper consumption drop to the level of 1998. This, together with the
industry’s continued effort to increase recycling made, for the second year in a row, the recycling rate
jump up, resulting in a record high 72.2%.”
However, the ERPC warns that there may be a swing in the opposite direction when the economy
picks up, as the recycling industry may not at frst be able to match increases in paper consumption. It
expects the recycling rate temporarily to fall below 70% in 2010, closer to the original target of 66%.
Since 1998, the base year of the frst voluntary commitment, the paper industry has increased
annual paper recycling by 45%, growing from less than 40 million tonnes of paper recycled to 58
million tonnes last year.

Wheat fbre
It is possible to make paper from any
fbrous material, from cloth to animal
dung. Italian paper manufacturer
Fabrini even makes a paper out of
algae collected from the Venice lagoon.
Now Envireco has introduced a paper
made only from wheat straw. As well as
making its paper pulp from straw, the
manufacturer uses wheat husk as a bio-
fuel to generate 80% of its electricity.

Light, not lightweight
Portucel Soporcel's new offce paper has
a different approach to sustainability
based around the notion of the
responsible use of resources. Not only is
Inacopia Offce 75 gsm made primarily
with energy from renewable resources
(80%), but being a lightweight paper, it
uses less water, energy and timber than
heavier 80gsm stock. M-real recently
added a 75gsm, 75% recycled grade to
its Evolve range of business papers.
