Paper round-up
Paper manufacturers continue
to improve the environmental
credentials of their products,
as Europe leads the world in
paper recycling.
in brief...
Surging prices
The price of recovered paper is predicted
to surge over the next fve years as
demand in the developing world
outstrips supply. In the latest Outlook for
Global Recovered Paper Markets report,
RISI, a leading information provider
for the global forest products industry,
argues that prices for recovered paper
will continue to rise in response to a
number of factors, including growing
demand in developing nations; limited
supply in the developed world (thanks
to already high recovery rates and
downward pressure on graphic paper
sales from electronic communications);
and the diversion of virgin and recycled
fbre into energy production.

Renewables growth
The decision of pulp and paper plants
to make the switch from fossil fuels
to woody biomass fuels has fuelled a
rapid expansion in the consumption
of renewable energy by the industry.
Analysis by FisherSolve shows that
between 2006 and 2009, global
consumption of biomass by the pulp
industry increased by 51%. Although the
biggest increases have occurred in mills
in Latin America/Oceania, those in North
America and Europe are still the largest
users of biomass.

10 years of PEFC
The Programme for the Endorsement of
Forest Certifcation (PEFC) is celebrating
the 10th anniversary of its UK launch.
Since 2000, PEFC has issued more than
1,300 chain of custody certifcates in
the UK – almost 20% of the global
total. It has also extended PEFC Forest
Management certifcation to more
than one million hectares of UK forests,
including all Forestry Commission forests
in England, Scotland andWales, and
some 500 privately owned forest estates.
Big falls
Preliminary fgures from the
Confederation of European Paper
Industries show that paper and board
output in Europe fell by 11% in 2009.
The total production of less than 90
million tonnes was the lowest since
2001. The biggest declines were in
coated paper (-20%), graphic grades
(-15%), newsprint (-12%) and uncoated
graphic grades (-11%). Overall, paper
deliveries for the year fell by 12%, in
line with a decrease in paper and board
consumption of 12%. Exports outside
the CEPI region declined by 19%.

Consistent quality
Robert Horne Group is promising more consistent quality and dependable whiteness for
its FSC-certifed revive 50:50 50% recycled paper as a result of a new partnership with
Arjowiggins Graphic. Other enhancements include a lower carbon footprint and a fully
auditable waste trail.
Philippa Charlton, Group Marketing Director at Robert Horne, said: "Robert Horne's
new partnership with Arjowiggins Graphic confrms our continued commitment to ensure
the consistent and reliable sourcing of the revive 50:50 range. Considerable work has been
implemented to optimise the quality of the waste stream to ensure a constant white and clean
end product. The UK also supplies 20-30% of the waste paper used in revive 50:50's production
saving precious landfll." Revive 50:50 is targeted at Government and corporate buyers requiring

The right image
Offce buyers are the target market
for Antalis's new Image paper. The
competitively priced range comprises
four paper qualities: Image Volume
for high volume printing and copying;
the bright white multi-purpose
Image Business for everyday business
communications (FSC- and PEFC-
certifed); Image Impact for colour
printing; and the ultra-smooth Image
Impact Plus for the highest quality colour
printing of graphics and images. Both
Image Impact and Image Impact Plus are
ColorLok and FSC accredited.
Product manager Rob Chandler said
Antalis had introduced the new range to
simplify paper purchasing for resellers
and customers.
“Offce paper ranges have become
overly complicated and their product
descriptions are either so technical or
ambiguous that resellers are fnding
their sales proposition too complex or
confusing. Meanwhile, brand proliferation
and baffing industry jargon means that
their customers are struggling to make
purchasing decisions. Based on this
market feedback, we have developed
the new, simply structured Image
range of quality offce papers with
stand-out branding and clear product
differentiation,” he said.
