Employees in the United Kingdom spend less time in the office than workers in any other country – and think even that’s too much. According to Returning for Good, a Unispace Global Workplace Insights report based on a survey of 9,500 employees and 6,650 business leaders from 17 countries, just 34% of employees in the UK spend four or more days a week in the office. The global average is 50%. Despite the UK’s comparatively low attendance levels, employees want to reduce the number of days spent in the workplace even further. While 53% of UK workers ultimately expect to be asked to spend at least four days a week in the office, just 21% of workers in the UK say they would be happy to do so. This puts them at odds with employers, 74% of whom are looking forward to increased office attendance. In fact, 75% of employers believe that career progression including pay rises, promotions and bonuses will be adversely affected by hybrid work, compared to just 59% of employees who think that’s the case. The UK also recorded the lowest level of staff loyalty (68% versus the global average of 77%). This, too, was underestimated by employers, with 74% believing their employees are devoted to their organisation. The differing opinions of employers and employees are also evident in attitudes towards hot-desking. While hot-desking is prominent in the UK, with 56% of employees indicating their office is set up to work in this way (compared to the global average of 48%), 76% of people who hot-desk say they would be happy to head into the office more often if they had an assigned desk. Global results The UK is not the only country in which employers and employees appear to be moving in different directions. Globally, 72% of companies have now mandated a return to the workplace. Of these, 42% have experienced higher than A hard retur Employers and employees on collision course over return to work, warns Unispace WORKPLACE businessinfomag.uk magazine 22 Is the quality of your VoIP telephone calls letting you down? “POUVEZ-VOUS M’ENTENDRE?” Springer Spaniel [Canis lupus familiaris]
