The summer holiday season is upon us; a relief for many, but
unfortunately not always the relaxing experience one hopes
for. At the moment, British passengers are facing long queues
and delays because of tougher EU border controls. This is
just the latest in a series of traveller horror stories that
seem to have come thick and fast since BA’s IT meltdown.
Reading the headlines you wouldn’t know that airlines have
done much to improve the customer experience. With paperless
tickets and boarding passes, online check-in and self-service
kiosks, travelling today is a lot less hassle than it used to be. And
airports and airlines continue to invest in new technology to
improve things further. Gatwick, for example, recently installed
beacon technology, which enables passengers to navigate the
airport with AR and in the future could help prevent flight delays
(see page 5).
The experience of airlines and their passengers is a useful
reminder that digitisation is not always a smooth ride. Just
ask travellers at Stansted Airport who had to wait more than a
day to get their cars back after a technical glitch grounded the
airport’s meet and greet parking system.
While there will be bumps along the way, no one seriously
doubts that digitising processes is the way ahead. Pretty much
any paper-based process would benefit from automation and
digitisation, including clocking in and out, as we explore on page
31, and customer communications, where email, weblinks, social
media and other digital channels are gradually taking over from
printed communications.
The key word here is gradual. As Neopost explains in a new
guide produced in association with
Business Info
(see page
34), the printed page is still an effective and popular means
of communication. In the short-, medium- and long-term,
organisations will continue to have to produce and process
postal communications alongside digital alternatives.
Synchronising different channels, maintaining a consistent
corporate identity and providing a unified view of all
communications are essential if businesses are to enjoy a
smooth transition to paper-less operations and avoid the many
bumps on the road ahead.
