Leading headset manufacturers Plantronics and Jabra have released
separate studies highlighting how headsets can improve the
comfort of workers and enhance customer service by reducing
misunderstandings caused by noisy working environments.
A three-month study of office workers in the UK, Germany and Italy
by Plantronics and the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic reinforces
how using a headset instead of a telephone handset for as few as two
hours a day can help reduce neck ache, back pain and headaches.
In the study, 50% of participants who experienced neck ache or
headaches at the start of the study (54% and 44% respectively) said
that the pain had “totally disappeared” after just four weeks of use.
Two thirds of those who continued to experience back and shoulder
pain reported a decrease in the number of days they were affected and
in the level of pain experienced.
Quiet, please
For their study, Jabra and Frost & Sullivan, surveyed 250 contact centre
managers. More than nine out of 10 cited sound levels caused by
multiple calls taking place at the same time as a major problem that
contributed to lost sales, misunderstandings and reduced productivity.
Ninety-one per cent said that they actively sought to reduce
disturbances caused by background noise by moving noisy coffee
machines and copiers or laying carpets on wooden floors. More than
half of managers in large contact centres said they were considering
using remote agents as a way of reducing the problem.
Almost three quarters (73%) of all respondents viewed quality
headsets with noise cancellation features as the number one factor
in creating a satisfactory work environment, rising to 91% in larger
contact centres.
Frost & Sullivan’s study follows an earlier Jabra survey, released this
time last year, in which 81% of Newport City Homes employees agreed
that the sound quality of headsets led to better customer relationships
and 84% said they could hear callers far more clearly with a headset
than a handset.

Little Things that
Work in a BigWay
A sound investment
Two new surveys underline the ergonomic
benefits of headsets in offices and call centres
The Jabra PRO 900 Series is designed for the 93% of office workers who
don’t yet use a headset when at work. The series includes two DECT
wireless headsets with noise cancelling microphones, the Jabra PRO 920
for desk phones and the Jabra PRO 930 for UC softphones. When Jabra
tested more than 1,000 of the headsets with partners across the globe,
90% of the test panel found the equipment easy to set up and 87%
praised its sound quality.
