Scanners
4. Hardware Improvements
The fourth development is enhanced
hardware including 50% faster scanning
speeds (up to 60 pages/120 images
per minute A4 colour, 200dpi); a new
paper feed mechanism that protects
fragile documents; intelligent multi-
feed detection; embossed plastic card
scanning, singly or in batches of up to
three; and two image processing engines,
Kofax VRS 5.0 and IPC (Image Processing
Controls).
The new scanners cost from £920 (ex
VAT) and come with ScandAll PRO 2.0
image capture software and Kofax
VRS 5.0 as standard. The fi-6140Z and
fi-6240Z also include the ScandAll
PRO Premium option for 2D code
recognition and indexing.

blank page detection.
By combining the high performance
and image quality of fi-series workgroup
business scanners with access to personal
productivity tools, Z Generation devices
allow users to get maximum value from
their investment, increase productivity
and lower the total cost of ownership.
2. Managed Scan Profiles.
Another feature likely to be welcomed
by knowledge workers is the ability of IT
administrators to apply scan profiles for
defined Scan-to-Process applications to
each and every scanner in a company.
This saves non-specialist users from
having to worry about image resolution
and other settings and ensures that
captured images are of the right size
and quality for any post processing
required, such as text recognition. All the
knowledge worker has to do is click on
the pre-defined profile.
3. Centralised Administration
In addition, centralised administration
relieves knowledge workers of the
burden of device management. The IT
department (or a service provider) can
send updates and modifications to the
scanners and provide remote support.
The SCA console window gives a view
of all scanners on the network, while
automatic error reports and consumables
replacement notifications – a first for a
desktop scanner attached to a PC client
– allow problems to be dealt
with centrally.
First 100% wireless scanner
Visioneer and Xerox have introduced the first
battery-powered scanner that uses Wi-Fi to
wirelessly transmit JPG images and multipage PDF
files to PCs, mobile phones, tablets and the cloud.
As well as removing the need for a physical
connection between scanner and PC, the Xerox
Mobile Scanner with integrated 4 GB Eye-Fi SD
memory card enables PC/Mac-free scanning thanks
to its ability to transmit scanned images to Android
and iOS devices.
Users can scan a
document in
colour, create a
PDF file and send
it to a mobile
phone in seconds:
simply press the
power button,
select a file
format (PDF or
JPG) and insert
the document.
The Xerox Mobile Scanner costs
£249.99.

PortableWorkForce
Epson is meeting the needs of mobile workers
with the EpsonWorkForce DS-30 portable colour
document scanner. Small enough to fit into a
laptop bag, the DS-30 USB-powered scanner
has one-touch scan-to-cloud capabilities and a
built-in TWAIN interface, the industry standard
for scanning, for integration with third-party
Enterprise Content Management (ECM)
applications.
New Document Capture Pro software and a
customisable one-touch
button allow users to
scan directly to email,
FTP, a specific directory
folder or to popular
cloud services such
as SharePoint, Google
Docs and Evernote.
The DS-30 comes with impressive functionality
including searchable PDF, RGB colour dropout,
auto de-skew, auto page size detection, secure PDF,
text enhancement, auto rotation and punch hole
removal, bundled Abbyy Fine Reader software for
Optical Character Recognition and Presto! BizCard 5
for organising scanned business cards.
On the downside, the £190.80 scanner is
simplex, which means that it can scan just one side
of a page at a time.

World’s fastest
Canon has just launched what it claims is the
world’s fastest USB-powered portable scanner.
The £257 imageFORMULA P-215 can scan at up
to 15 pages per minute, capturing both sides of a
page in a single pass.
It has a separate card feeder slot for thick plastic
ID and embossed cards and an integrated 20-page
Focus: Portable Scanners
document feeder that saves time when scanning
multi-page documents.
Suitable for small offices, home use and mobile
workers, the P-215 is compatible with both Mac
and PC operating systems and can scan directly to
cloud applications such as GoogleDocs, Evernote
and SharePoint.
Built-in CaptureOnTouch Lite software means
that the scanner can be used immediately without
the need to install additional drivers or software.
The CaptureOnTouch install provides greater
functionality including multiple file
formats such as PDF, PDF/A, TIFF, JPEG
and PowerPoint.
The P-215 also features ISIS/
TWAIN drivers for Windows users, a
TWAIN driver for Mac users and SDKs
for integrating the scanner into enterprise
applications and workflows. Look out for a full
review in the next issue.
