01732 759725 42 WORKPLACE I couldn’t do my job without... Windows 10 is no longer supported because Windows 11 doesn’t work with old hardware. Using products for longer is one of the most important steps we can take to reduce our environmental impact; more than 80% of the climate impact of a notebook computer, for example, occurs during the manufacturing phase. My advice for anyone who needs a new computer is to choose one with more performance than you need now to accommodate future needs, and to take good care of it so that it lasts as long as possible. It is also important to consider repairability and durability, especially for portable devices that tend to break more often than desktops. Many portable products are replaced prematurely because the battery loses its ability to hold a charge, so it’s wise to choose one with a battery that can be replaced easily. Incidentally, the battery is the only thing I have replaced on my X230. I had to change it after six years when the battery time was down to about one hour. That aside, the main reason I can still use the notebook without major problems is the switch to the cloud, which allows an old computer to stay functional longer. Screwdriver I don´t go anywhere without tools – like a screwdriver. You never know when you are going to need it. Because my work is to do with computers, displays and other IT products, I often open up devices to check or repair things. Someone once called me MacGyver because I always like to fix things. A diverse professional (and personal) network As CEO of a small organisation that operates on a global stage, I need to collaborate a lot with other organisations and individuals. Our work stretches far beyond our own organisation and we are highly dependent on contacts. Our impact on sustainable IT products would not be possible without our use of networks like LinkedIn. My bikes I always cycle to work, using a ten-year-old commuter workhorse. I don’t want to drive and risk getting stuck in traffic, and it gives me a daily dose of exercise and fresh air. On top of this, I try to exercise three or four times a week in other ways. In the summer, I go cycling along the country roads in the archipelago. It boosts my memory and reasoning and helps me stay focused. www.tcodevelopment.com Sören Enholm is CEO of TCO Development, the Stockholm-based organisation behind worldleading sustainability certification TCO Certified. Sören leads a small team of people with a mission to help make the world a much better place and has been on the list of Sweden’s most influential people within sustainability for two years in a row. The TCO Certified logo has been seen on displays since the 90s and in movies like The Matrix. Here, Sören highlights six things he relies on to get his work done Eight hours of sleep I couldn’t do my job without a good night’s sleep. Even though my work spans the globe and meetings can sometimes be at inconvenient times, I always go to bed early to get eight hours of sleep. Waking up well rested helps me feel refreshed and energised throughout the day. And speaking of starting the day in the best possible way… Oatmeal, nuts and fruit I never, ever skip breakfast as it makes me ready for the day’s challenges. My favorite breakfast includes oatmeal, nuts and plenty of fruit. I never drink coffee for breakfast, but usually have a cup later in the morning, not least because it gives me the opportunity to take a break and talk to colleagues by the coffee machine. My 10-year-old computer I use a Lenovo X230 from 2013. It still works well for what I use it for. And I’m going to keep using it until it doesn’t work anymore. That will probably be when Sören Enholm
