Untangling the emergency purchases and compromises of the last year and creating a more professional and secure footing for the years ahead will be an opportunity for resellers and managed service providers to build on relationships developed during the pandemic. As Gregg Lalle of ConnectWise argues on page 25, the opportunities are particularly attractive for managed service providers who can relieve SMBs of the uncertainty and aggravation of day-to-day IT management, leaving them free to devote their time and resources to more strategic IT projects. Of course, MSPs have an important role to play here too, advising their clients about new and emerging technologies that have the potential to accelerate digital transformation. The rewards of doing so (and the risks of procrastination) are highlighted in a new report from Accenture, which reveals how digital transformation is widening the digital gap, with leaders growing revenues five times faster than laggards. Between 2015 and 2018, leading enterprises were growing only two times faster than laggards. Turn to page 6 for more details. Another factor likely to become more important this year is sustainability, with COP26 in Glasgow concentrating leaders’ minds on the need for action on climate change (one hopes), while they can still paint with broad brush strokes and before the minutiae of post-pandemic Government becomes all-consuming. Businesses, too, should take this opportunity to reduce their environmental impact. Not least because there could be money in doing so. HP claims that in each of the last two years it has generated $1 billion in sales through its sustainability initiatives, and it is now encouraging HP resellers to follow its lead.
