Technology Reseller v20 2019
Big data, big savings Swedish IT company AVTECH has helped Norwegian Air Shuttle reduce CO2 emissions from its fleet of 106 Boeing 737-800 aircraft by 2,000 tons over a three-month period. The AVTECH 10K weather grid uses the UK Met Office’s weather modelling system and weather observations from all over the world to enable pilots to avoid unfavourable winds at given altitudes and to start their descent phase at exactly the right moment. Norwegian Air says it has been able to save an average of 22 kilos per flight purely by optimising planes’ descent. 01732 759725 INNOVATIONS 06 The power of touch Applications in hotels, shops, restaurants and schools and colleges could all benefit from the Philips 222B9T 22-inch interactive LCD monitor. The Full HD display comes with projective capacitive 10-point touch technology, a stylus, IP54 protection against contact, dust and water protection, an anti-glare screen coating, and a tiltable, height-adjustable Philips SmartStand. www.philips.co.uk/c-m-pc/monitors Power on tap Rittal and its partners, SICP and WestfalenWIND IT, have won first prize in the Ideas and research in relation to data centres category at the German Data Centre Awards 2019 for their WindCORES++ project. This reduces the environmental impact of data centres by locating them where there is a direct supply of green energy, in this case within wind turbines. WindCORES++ can accommodate 50 IT racks, plus security rooms, air conditioning, UPS and monitoring, in just one wind turbine. Over 90% of the data centre’s power requirements are met by wind, while the use of existing buildings and infrastructure, e.g. the power grid, saves resources. Android first Juniper Systems Limited has announced its first Android OS rugged handheld computers. The Allegro 3 Rugged Handheld Computer is designed for applications that require full alpha-numeric keyboard input, while the Archer 3 Rugged Handheld Computer is ideal for single-handed data entry. The Android 7 Nougat operating system enables more rapid loading of programs and files and faster data transfers. www.junipersys.com Smaller footprint NEC Enterprise Solutions (EMEA) has launched a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution powered by Scale Computing’s HC3 software. The NEC HCI platform gives SMEs and branch offices a complete virtualised solution in a single appliance designed for rapid deployment, ease-of- use, seamless scaling and high performance. The platform featuring NEC’s D120h high-density server can host four individual server nodes for a smaller data centre footprint and reduced infrastructure costs. www.nec-enterprise.com Virtual displays In an industry first, Philips Professional Display Solutions has brought out an augmented reality app that lets partners walk their customers through the product selection process. The Augmented Reality Configurator, or Arc, bridges the gap between design concept and final installation by showing how a display (or multiple displays) would look on any size or type of wall. An AR toolkit accessed via a connected tablet or smartphone uses the device’s camera to capture a space and then shows selected models mounted on the virtual wall. Fraud detector Cloud-based Purchase-to-Pay software provider Yooz is helping to reduce the problem of invoice fraud with a new solution that uses machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to spot fraudulent and forged documents. YoozProtect detects duplicate invoices and unusual, inconsistent data and amounts based on historical data, automatically issuing alerts in the case of changes to supplier bank details, for example. In addition, it provides a secure audit trail of internal processes and an ISO 14641-compliant archive of electronic documents, with time- stamping by electronic signature. www.getyooz.com Gentle reminder The University of Bath and Goldsmiths, University of London are investigating whether a small device that plugs into a PC could encourage people to change their passwords or update privacy settings more often. Researchers plan to use programmable Adafruit Circuit Playgrounds to provide end users with subtle desktop reminders to improve security. For example, a device could detect when someone gets up to leave their desk and remind them to lock their screen using sounds, lights or vibration. Secure meetings UK conference call provider Meetupcall has achieved ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certification for information security and quality management. Head of Operations Louise Elliott said: “We have thousands of customers discussing confidential company business on Meetupcall conference calls every day. Achieving ISO 27001 certification reinforces our commitment to client security. ISO auditors were so impressed with Meetupcall that the ISO itself has signed up as a customer!” www.meetupcall.com more...
