Commissioner Jourová played an instrumental role in reshaping data protection and ensuring the swift adoption of the EU data protection reform, which came into effect on May 25. www.dataprotectionworldforum.com Fewer attacks UK businesses were each subjected to an average of 52,596 cyber-attacks in the second quarter of the year, down from 53,981 in January to March, according to analysis by business ISP Beaming. This is equivalent to 578 attempts each day or one every two and a half minutes. The most common targets were remotely controlled devices, such as building control systems and networked security cameras, which attracted 41% of all attacks. www.beaming.co.uk Insider threat levels fall in UK but rise in US The UK and Germany have seen a drop in insider threat levels that could in part be attributable to GDPR, claims data security company Clearswift. Since 2017, cyber security incidents originating within an organisation, as a percentage of all incidents, has fallen from 73% to 65% in the UK and from 80% to 75% in Germany. In the United States, a country outside the direct jurisdiction of GDPR, insider threats have risen from 72% to 80% of all incidents over the same period. Dr Guy Bunker, SVP Products at Clearswift, said: “I think at the very least what GDPR has done is ensure firms have a better view of where critical data sits within their business and highlighted to employees that data security is an issue that is now of critical importance, which may be why we’ve seen a drop in the insider threat across EU countries. If a firm understands where the critical information within the business is held and how it is flowing in and out of the network, then it is best placed to manage and protect it from the multitude of threat vectors we’re seeing today.” www.clearswift.com Personalisation becomes the norm for email marketers The era of ‘batch and blast’ email marketing is on the wane, according to email consultancy Holistic Email Marketing and marketing technology provider Pure360. Their Email Marketing Personalisation Report shows that 94% of brands are, to varying degrees, already personalising messages to customers and subscribers, with 36% of marketers using advanced tactics, such as dynamic content, and 8% making use of AI and machine learning. The study shows that marketers are moving beyond personalising only the subject line or first name and are incorporating data from email behaviour (56%), purchase history (41%), lifecycle stage (29%) and even contextual data (12%) to add content relevant to individual recipients. www.holisticemailmarketing.com Mobile workers too busy doing other things Field-based employees, such as community care workers and boiler repair people, spend just 1.5 days per week on their core job, according to The Age of Peak Mobility report commissioned by Totalmobile. Almost three-quarters of their time is taken up by admin, travel and meetings. Jim Darragh, CEO of Totalmobile, said: “Mobile workers need a solution that takes care of time-consuming admin, journey planning and paperwork, but they are currently having to make do with the same tools as years ago. At the same time, they are faced with bigger jobs lists, more to do in a day and more to report on for every interaction. The unfortunate result is the current situation in which mobile workers spend as little as 30% of their time on client work.” www.totalmobile.co.uk
