Technology Reseller - v08
There is no doubt that enabling children to learn can be greatly enhanced through the use of technology. Indeed, more and more children are exposed to some form of mobile device even before they start school. Most experts believe that there is strong evidence to support the premise that personal access to a digital device has positive effects on learning as well as preparing young people for an increasingly digital lifestyle. Of course, 1 on 1 engagement is key for students and teachers alike. However, according to the Learning Foundation, there are still more than 1 million children in the UK who have little or no access to a device. Worse still, they cannot get on-line at home thereby limiting their opportunities to do homework in a safe and supervised environment. Extending access to basic technology beyond the school gates is vital. The government has recently delivered free Wi-Fi across all libraries in England. Over half of UK residents have a library card and more than 35% of people living in the most disadvantaged areas visit their library. However, it’s within the school and at home where most benefit can be derived. Traditionally schools and academies have leant towards ICT suites, particularly in the K12 stage, historically powered by a Microsoft OS. Nowadays with the emergence and availability of new and economic alternative technologies this trend is changing, although there will always be a place for the classic desktop in the learning ecosystem. Operating systems for education When considering platforms for education two of the leading choices at present are Chrome or Microsoft Windows. Both have specific benefits aligned to them. Chrome is cloud based which helps it to be extremely easy to manage and helps to reduce infrastructure costs. No local storage also helps the devices to run faster for longer. The devices (Chromebooks etc.) are typically low cost and hard-wearing, making them well suited to an educational setting. Chrome also benefits from an exceptional app suite that opens up a host of new resources and learning opportunities. Windows 10S is designed to offer a more curated Microsoft experience tailored to an education setting.
