BombaySapphiredistilleryagem
TheBombaySapphiregindistilleryat LaverstokeMill inHampshire
has received theBREEAMAward for Industrial Design. Last year, it
became thefirst refurbishment toachievean ‘Outstanding’design-
stageBREEAMaccreditation.
TheMill, whichwas previously used to producewatermarked banknote
paper for the Bank of England, is situatedwithin aConservationArea and
Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in rural Hampshire.
As part of the refurbishment of the 2,500 squaremetre site, Bombay
SapphireDistillery recycled buildingmaterials from demolished buildings;
retainedover 80%of the buildings’ existing structure and facades; used
responsibly sourcedmaterialswhere possible; and enhanced the ecological
value of the site throughnative species planting and the re-designof the
riverbank.
Another key consideration is theMill’s use of low carbon energy,
whichhas led to a 38% reduction in carbon emissions.Highlights
include a biomass boiler that burns by-products from the distilling
process, photo-voltaic panels on the roof and a hydro-electric turbine
in the RiverTest. Excess heat from the distillation processmaintains
temperatures in the glasshouses.
