Today’s printers and copiers
are a far cry from devices
launched just a few years
ago. Once limited to a
maximum of three or four
functions, they now act as a
platform from which you can
access as many programs
and services as you want,
just as you can with a
smartphone.
Large colour touchscreens
enable walk-up users to
interact with apps that either
provide two-way communication
with server-based programs
or provide all the functionality
embedded on the device itself.
These serverless solutions are
an increasingly popular option,
as they are a simple and cost-
effective way of deploying a
solution, even when a device
isn’t connected to a network.

Solutions supports both options
through its Hybrid Platform
for Advanced Solutions
(HyPAS). At its simplest, HyPAS
makes it possible to deliver
the advanced features that
customers expect from modern
devices, such as card-based
authentication, mobile printing,
connection to cloud, user
controls and the ability to scan
straight to a network folder.
The platform can also be
used by KYOCERA and third
party developers to provide
additional functionality,
delivered in the form of apps
that can be accessed with a
touch of a finger. This gives
you the potential to transform
a generic MFP into a device
optimised for your specific
needs.

Apps for education
The education sector has long
been a focus for KYOCERA
and its resellers (see box).
The reputation of KYOCERA
printers and MFPs for economy
and long-lasting reliability
makes them a natural fit for
schools and colleges under
pressure to cut waste and
unnecessary expenditure. In
addition, KYOCERA supplies a
range of software solutions that
schools and colleges can use
to monitor, control, track and,
where necessary, charge for
prints, copies and scans.
Recently it has started to
develop apps specifically for
the education sector, notably
Teaching Assistant, unveiled
at BETT 2014, KYOCERA SIMS
Connector and BioStore.
Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistant is a highly
focused app that speeds up
the creation and marking of
multiple choice tests so that
teachers can spend less time
marking and more time with
their pupils.
KYOCERA estimates that
Teaching Assistant can save a
typical primary school teacher
30-60 minutes per test, whilst
also eliminating marking errors
and making it easier to assess
the performance and progress
of individual pupils and an
entire class.
The app automates three
key processes and, because
it is embedded on an MFP,
everything can be done at the
device itself:
1. The creation and printing
of multiple choice tests.
Just
enter questions and the choice
of answers via the control panel
and Teaching Assistant will
print off the required number of
copies including a master sheet
marked with a barcode label;
2. The scanning and
marking of tests.
Once a
multiple choice test has been
completed, scan in the master
sheet with the correct answers,
followed by pupils’ test
sheets. Teaching Assistant will
automatically correct and mark
each scanned test.
3. The production of
individual and class reports.
With just one click, Teaching
Assistant produces summary
and detailed test reports
including statistics, bar charts
and histograms.
Results and test reports can
be printed on the spot, saved
to a USB flash drive or emailed.
Once a teacher logs out of
the app, all data relating to a
test is automatically cleared
from the device to maintain
confidentiality.
