Printers
Electronics for Imaging (EFI)
is renowned as a pioneer in
desktop publishing, cloud
solutions, workflow tools and
digital output. Today, half
of its revenue comes from
industrial inkjet printing, yet
EFI remains a major force
in office printing through its
Fiery print servers and mobile
print solutions.
EFI’s expertise in these
areas enables it to address
two fast growing areas of
office printing: the in-house
production of print jobs
that would once have been
outsourced and secure mobile
printing from any type of
portable device to any make or
model of printer.
They perform two main
functions: they speed up the
processing of large files and
they optimise colour print
quality. This makes them
essential for any business that
prints large graphics-intensive
files or wishes to maintain
a consistent brand identity
across all printed output.
Fiery servers have always
been used by commercial
printers, graphics specialists
and print rooms where there
is a need for high speed, high
quality output. Increasingly,
they are also to be found in the
general office, as businesses of
all sizes take advantage of the
capabilities of today’s colour
MFPs to produce a greater
variety of print jobs in-house.
Instead of paying a
commercial printer or copy
shop to produce business
stationery, presentations, sales
proposals, company reports,
newsletters, leaflets, flyers and
marketing material, more and
more companies are choosing
to produce this material
themselves.
Printing documents
on-demand saves money;
makes it possible to respond
more quickly to business
opportunities; eliminates
the inefficiencies and waste
associated with pre-printed
documents that can quickly
become out-of-date; eliminates
the need to devote space
to document storage; and
maximises an organisation’s
return on its investment in
imaging devices.
However, there are
challenges, too.
The types of document
involved are more complex
than run-of-the-mill office print
jobs: they tend to contain
colour graphics and photos;
feature custom colours, for
example in a company logo;
require finishing; and, in some
cases, make use of variable
data printing for
personalised 1-to-1
marketing.
Any business that
brings colour printing
in-house must
match, or come
close to matching,
the print quality
provided by external
suppliers; maximise
productivity to
achieve the time-
savings hoped for;
avoid bottlenecks
that could impact
day-to-day printing;
and achieve cost-
savings, for example
by eliminating waste.
Because documents will,
in many cases, be produced
by office workers rather than
graphics or design specialists,
it is vital that any in-house
process is intuitive and easy to
follow.
Fiery servers
The solution MFP vendors
and businesses turn to most
are EFI Fiery servers. Their
combination of processing
power, colour management
software and productivity tools
enable users to get more out
of their print devices – and
maximise cost-savings. And,
because they are based on
open standards, they will fit
into any print environment and
can be integrated with popular
print management and cost-
accounting systems, such as
PaperCut, uniflow and Copitrak.
n
Productivity.
EFI Fiery
servers process large, complex
print files quickly for rapid
throughput and spool, RIP
and print simultaneously so
that print devices operate at
their rated speed. Productivity
is improved further with
software tools like Fiery Image
Enhance Visual Editor, which
enables users to enhance
image brightness, contrast,
definition and saturation on the
fly without having to open the
original design application.
n
Print quality.
Accurate
colour reproduction and the
precise matching of printed
output to the colours designers
see on-screen help maintain a
consistent corporate identity
across all stationery and
marketing material.
n
Ease of use.
Easy-to-use
job management software
decreases set-up times and
eliminates errors for a fast job
turnaround. Using Fiery Virtual
Printers, IT administrators can
pre-programme settings for
common print jobs, saving time
for users and minimising the
risk of expensive errors.
n
Cost savings.
EFI Fiery
servers help businesses
maximise cost savings, not only
by bringing print jobs in-house
and reducing waste, but by
enforcing best practice e.g.
through Fiery Virtual Printers
that mandate mono or two-
sided printing.
Document creation
EFI Fiery tools are not limited
to document output. Free
software tools simplify the
design and production
of professional looking
documents, booklets and
marketing material.
