3D Printing from a reseller near you
3D printers, supplies and accessories are becoming more widely
available as office supplies distributors embrace the technology.
Following the recent decision by Midwich to start distributing 3D
Systems’ Cube products, VOW has become the
exclusive UK business supplies wholesaler
for iMakr 3D printers. It is offering
its resellers a range of eight models,
starting with the Solidoodle 4
consumer model (£708) and going
up to the Makerbot Replicator 2X
(£1,908). RS Components has
announced that it is expanding its
offering to encompass 3D Systems
models as well as the Ormerod 3D
printing kit from RepRapPro.

Battery-powered
MFP
Ricoh is meeting the needs
of mobile workers with
the launch of the world’s
first battery-powered
multifunctional product (MFP),
the Ricoh SG 3120B SFNw.
Based on Geljet technology,
the colour printer/copier/
scanner/fax can operate on
mains power or a rechargeable
battery that lasts for up to 500
copies or 1,000 prints. A handy
USB slot can be used to charge
a smartphone.
Beata Ulman, product
manager at Ricoh Europe,
said: “Typical applications
include remote warehouses,
outdoor events and relief
agencies working in remote or
inaccessible areas.”
The SG 3120B SFNw has
a colour/mono print speed of
29 pages per minute and a
maximum paper capacity of
800 sheets. It uses fast-drying
viscous, pigment-based Liquid
Gel ink.

With the launch of the Samsung Xpress C1860 (colour) and
Xpress M2885 (B&W) series laser printers/MFPs, small and
medium-sized businesses can enjoy the convenience of print-on-
tap NFC functionality, as well as WiFi Direct connectivity. Both
models are compatible with Samsung’s latest mobile printing
solution, Samsung Cloud Print (see page 20 for more details)
and can be monitored and managed via a smartphone using
Samsung’s new Easy Print Management for mobile devices. The
Xpress C1860 sand Xpress M2885 have print speeds of 18 and
28 pages per minute respectively.
HP has launched a new range
of Officejet Pro inkjet printers
that combine low running
costs with sophisticated
functionality including NFC
tap-to-print functionality,
support for HP Web Jetadmin
printer management and the
HP Flow CM Professional
online content management
system. Prices start at £146.
In the US, these devices are
compatible with HP’s Instant Ink
personal MPS programme. At the
time of going to press, HP was
unable to confirm whether they
would also be eligible for Instant
Ink in the UK.
HP Instant Ink is a new way for
consumers to buy printer ink that
is claimed to be more convenient
and up to 70% cheaper than ad
hoc consumables purchases.
Consumers who enrol with
the programme pay HP a fixed
monthly subscription for a set
number of pages. There is no
limit to the number of cartridges
a customer can use. HP remotely
monitors the printer and
automatically sends extra high
capacity replacement supplies
when ink levels fall below a
certain level.
There are three Instant Ink
plans available: Occasional print,
which lets you print up to 50
colour pages per month for a
monthly subscription of £1.99;
Moderate Printing for up to 100
pages (£3.49 per month); and
Frequent Printing for up to 300
pages (£7.99 per month).
These page plans represent
exceptionally good value for
money for colour printing, with a
cost per colour page of between
2.5p and 4p. Unused pages
can be rolled over and even if
you exceed your page limit, the
cost of excess pages is far from
punitive (if printing in colour) –
£1 for 15 pages with Occasional
Print and £1 for 25 pages with
Frequent Printing.
As an example of the annual
savings on offer, HP points out
that printing 600 pages a year
would cost £24 for an Occasional
Print customer and £76 if buying
HP XL High Yield cartridges on an
ad hoc basis. Savings are even
greater on higher volume plans.
Subscribers can cancel or
change their plan online at any
time.
Printers eligible for Instant
Ink in the UK currently include
the HP Envy 4500 and HP Envy
5530 consumer all-in-ones.
If eligibility is extended to the
HP Officejet Pro 8620 and HP
Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-Ones,
small businesses, too, will
be able to enjoy Instant Ink’s
convenience and economical
printing.
Even if they are not included,
the business inkjets still have a
cost per page up to 50% lower
than comparable laser devices.
