PrintIT Reseller - issue 72

01732 759725 50 AND FINALLY Martin Fairman, UK and Ireland Managing Director, Lexmark 60 seconds with… What’s currently having the greatest impact on your business? The end-user shift to A4 based technology, driven by cost and functionality competitiveness against ‘the centralised copier’. This shift in buying behaviour has enabled Lexmark to drive growth as an A4 laser vendor in the UK in 2019, the positive impact on our business is growing demand from customers and partners for our vast portfolio around an A4-centric position. Where do you see the next big opportunity? Cloud, and its integration as part of product offerings. Resellers can now offer remotely managed and customer-centric cloud services that enable customers to simplify their print infrastructure. Not only does this have efficiency benefits, but it also allows partners to add more value to the print services they are providing through hassle- free maintenance, automatic supplies fulfilment, and predictable pricing within a simple monthly cost structure. What would make your day job easier? I am acutely aware I take personal ownership of too many tasks, as I always feel I’m the owner as they land on my desk. I am sure if I were to hand over more work, I will get more done. Something I continue to work on. What’s the best bit of business advice you’ve been given? Many years ago whilst working very late one night, a boss who I respected said: “Just remember, when you are long gone from this world, your gravestone will never say, ‘what a great employee, he’ll be sadly missed in the office’.” So just remember as we all work longer and more demanding hours, what’s really important in life. If you had had a crystal ball, would you have done anything differently? Not too much to be honest, as I am in a fortunate position, having managed and worked with some of the most talented people in our industry. And whilst print may not be considered by many as the ‘sexy’ end of the IT Market, I am proud that we have our first print only awards in October to recognise those talented and entrepreneurial people in our industry. What was your first job? Telesales for an American company called CalComp. What would be your dream job? I always wanted to be a vet, but the lure of the print market was just too strong! Fine dining and good wine, or curry and a pint? I’m greedy so both, Friday night with my mates – madras and a pint, dinner with my wife – it’s fine dining and a good wine. Money’s not an issue, what’s your perfect car… and where would you like to drive it? Driving a Lamborghini Aventador in Italy on the Stelvio pass in the sunshine. Favourite holiday destination? Really too many to choose from, but having lived and worked in Dubai I would say that’s my favourite. How do you like to spend your spare time? I don’t get much choice. I am either dad’s taxi to my two teenage boys, or being tasked with DIY projects by my wife, which I secretly do like doing. Describe your most embarrassing moment Whilst General Manager of Samsung, I realised during a very important meeting I had different coloured shoes on…..Needless to say I didn’t move out of my seat for three hours!
