PrintIT Reseller issue 118

01732 759725 36 INTERVIEW has been to provide parts and toners that will achieve yields, that will achieve the copy quality and the reliability that the industry demands. And certainly, at PCL we have made huge inroads, we will warrant our products to stand up against the OEM, for yield and reliability. We don’t see any real difference – what we provide we expect it to do exactly the same as an original product. PITR: Earlier this year, you joined ETIRA. I know you have long championed for industry standards and accreditations that extend beyond just toner. Is this something you are exploring with ETIRA? DH: Very much so, ETIRA was very much based around inkjet and toner cartridge recycling and again, coming away from the cheap imports using the OEM cores as part of their remanufacturing process. We’ve been pushing with ETIRA to see how we go about extending that accreditation – to get the ETIRA mark on our technical products, and it’s an ongoing process. There are some British Standard accreditations as well that are more loosely based around all remanufacturing. So again, we’re looking at those. But the ETIRA mark is important to us. Some of the committee members have seen what we do, we’re an open book at PCL, we do what we say and it’s important that the ethos around ETIRA carries forward to not just toner, it has to carry forward into the technical side of our industry, because it’s such a huge part and that’s where we are really. It’s an ongoing process and a very difficult process I think, because so much effort obviously went into the toner and inkjet side, you can almost see why the technical point of view was lost because toner and inkjet on its own is such a huge part of the industry. But PrintIT Reseller (PITR): Over the years, there has been much debate around OEM original vs. compatible vs. remanufactured consumables. What’s your take on this? Dave Higgot (DH): We are a true remanufacturer. We use collected OEM original units which are completely disassembled and reassembled. From a toner perspective, we fill OEM collected virgin cartridges that we may reverse engineer, we may do some modifications to them, but they are fundamentally OEM. I think that the industry suffered from some of the Chinese imports for sure, and reliability, but also remanufacturing itself. There’s been improvements step by step along the way and that comes from the components you put in in these units. Can you actually remanufacture or refurbish parts that are in those units rather than replace them? It’s all about their reliability and I think the biggest problem that the industry has, is all based around that reliability, which initially came from cheap imports that just didn’t last. The challenge for us against the OEM ETIRA was very much based around inkjet and toner cartridge recycling and again, coming away from the cheap imports using the OEM cores as part of their remanufacturing process Sustainable solutions In an exclusive interview with PrintIT Reseller, Andrew Ellis and Dave Higgott from PCL Direct talk about the company’s mission to close the loop and support a circular economy. Here’s an excerpt of the discussion From a Linear Economy to a Greener.. Circular Economy.
