This wild ride takes me from hardcore tech dives with my engineering team to doing strategy with product and marketing, so it’s no surprise my must-have list is a bit eclectic. 1 Ubuntu Linux: Remember the year of the Linux desktop? Mine was ages ago, but I’m still going strong with Ubuntu. It’s snappy (even on ageing hardware), the Unity desktop is a dream, and app support is top-notch (thanks to browser-based everything!). Plus, it’s free, as in beer and speech. Win-win! 2 Google Workspace: Microsoft Office is to Google Workspace what a landfill is to a botanical garden. We’ve been Google Workspace all the way since day one: Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet. I’d rather eat my keyboard than go back. 3 Slack: Remote-first life means async communication is king. Slack’s got the serious stuff covered, with organisation and automation tools. But it also lets us unleash our inner children with emojis, custom emojis, reactions and GIFs. 4 Vim and VSCode: I’m no Vim ninja, but I’m good enough. For small code bases or individual text files, it’s the most efficient editor for me. For anything more complex, I use VSCode – the language and tooling support is phenomenal. 5 Warp Terminal: Warp is a really new terminal. It prioritises user experience and collaboration, and it’s a real pleasure to use. It’s also got a load of optional gen AI features for helping with command-line tasks (what could possibly go wrong?). 6 My Daughter’s Footprint Drinks Mat: Every time I reach for my coffee, I’m greeted by my daughter’s tiny footprint from when she was five weeks old. It’s a reality check, a smile-inducer and a reminder that we’re all trying to leave this world a little better than we found it.
