Duraweld wins recognition for green practices

Duraweld has leapt 11 places to 28th position in this year’s Sunday Times Best Green Companies List, making it the econd highest ranked manufacturing ompany.

The Scarborough-based producer of olders, ring binders, dividers, organisers, oxes, conference packs, wallets and retail ackaging also achieved 5th place in the mall companies with medium impact’ ategory.

Boasting ISO 14001 accreditation and arbon zero status, Duraweld has pioneered he use of recycled polypropylene: in 2007 became the frst company in its industry o offer 100% recycled polypropylene made om its own manufacturing waste and in 008 became the frst company to offer 100% recycled white polypropylene. Last year, Duraweld reduced its overall CO2 tonnage by 0.07%. Savings were made by adding sprinklers to all taps, increasing the use of PIR sensors and buying a hybrid company pool car. In addition, all staff were issued with corporate gilets and feece jackets allowing the heating to be turned down by 2°C. This alone saved 260kg of carbon. Over the last 12 months Duraweld has cut water consumption by 11%; skips to landfll by 27%; offce paper purchases by 29%; and transport emissions by 32%.

A higher standard

Antalis McNaughton has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after reducing carbon emissions generated by its UK operations by 13.6% in 2010. The company has cut emissions from 17,424 tonnes in the 12 months to 30th September 2008 to 13,783 tonnes in the year to 30th September 2010.

Green awards

Green business practices within the stationery industry won recognition in the recent Environment and Energy Awards 2011, with Commercial and Offce Depot winning two of the 13 categories. Commercial won the NQA Environmental Leadership Award for Cultural Change; and Offce Depot won The Environment Product/Service Award.

Conquering carbon

Arjowiggins Graphic has achieved Carbon Footprint Standard accreditation following an audit of carbon emissions at its UK sales offce in Basingstoke. The appraisal examined various aspects of the business and included a ‘Carbon Healthcheck’ to identify how CO ² emissions could be cut further. ArjoWiggins already has FSC accreditation and since 2004 has worked with the Carbon Trust to reduce its carbon emissions by 5%.

Mitsubishi Pencil Co. is featuring artwork by Evannave on its Twitter page, after the 24-year old Edinburgh-based illustrator won a design competition promoting the company’s POSCA paint marker pens. As well as having her work shown online for the rest of 2011, Evannave received £50 worth of POSCA pens.

Golden ticket found

Jonathan Bower, branch manager at the Chiswick branch of Kall Kwik, has become the frst person in the UK, and only the second in Europe, to fnd a Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper Golden Ticket. As part of a European promotion, Mondi has inserted 12 Golden Tickets into reams of Mondi’s Color Copy SRA3 100gsm paper.Winners and their partners will be fown to a special event in Vienna due to be held in September.
