Steelcase taking major steps forward
Steelcase’s
2014 Corporate Sustainability Report
shows the firm
making continued progress toward the goal of a 25% reduction in its
environmental footprint by 2020.
Highlights include end-of-use strategies that diverted 50 million pounds of
unused furniture from landfill in the U.S. last year and the reclamation of over
26,000 workstations in Europe over the last six years.
The company has also expanded its renewable energy investments to
100% of global electricity use and initiated a one-of-a-kind supplier program
to promote investment in renewable energy by offering suppliers Steelcase’s
discounted rate.
It also reported a 20% increase in total giving by Steelcase and the Steelcase
Foundation, donating a combined total of approximately £4.2 million to
communities and organisations.

Report writes off growth in the
stationery market
According to
Stationery (Personal
& Office)
, a new Market Report
from business intelligence provider
Key Note, the UK market for
stationery products exhibited a
year-on-year contraction of 0.5%
in 2013. The market is currently
experiencing a period of long-
term decline, with consumption
falling across the corporate, public
and consumer sectors as digital
services replace ever more tasks
previously undertaken with the use
of stationery items.
With massive demand for business
software solutions and electronic
storage in the corporate sector, rising
uptake of electronic communications
in the consumer market and the
implementation of ‘Digital by Default’
in the public sector, the market for
stationery products has continued to
shrink over the last few years.
Nevertheless, certain sectors have
remained resilient. The giftware market
has been the strongest segment in the
stationery market, with new, innovative
products featuring vibrant designs
driving considerable growth. Other
high-growth areas include premium
products; cheaper, disposable items; and
highly sustainable and/or recyclable
products and solutions.
With the ongoing computerisation
of the corporate and social space, the
UK stationery market is expected to
continue its downwards spiral over the
next few years.
However, Key Note is predicting a
return to growth from 2017, albeit at
a relatively low rate, as manufacturers
and resellers realign supply with
demand and the UK economy improves.
