CEPI stats show decline in
paper use
The economic downturn and greater
digitisation helped reduce overall
consumption of paper and board in
Europe by 3.8% last year, according to
the Confederation of European Paper
Industries (CEPI). Over the same period,
European GDP decreased by 0.3%
(source: Eurostat – EU27).
CEPI statistics show that in 2012 CEPI
members produced 92.1 million tonnes of
paper and board, 1.6% fewer than in 2011.
Before the 2008 crisis, production was 97.9
million tonnes.
Exports of paper and board outside
Europe showed an increase of 5.3%, whilst
imports fell by 9.7% from 2011 levels.

A natural writing
experience
There are paper notebooks and there
are electronic ones and, thanks to
companies likeWacom, the differences
between the two are becoming ever less
noticeable.
The digitiser specialist recently launched
a new version of its Bamboo Paper app
which works with the company’s Intuos
Creative Stylus for a more natural note-
taking and writing experience on iPads.
Bamboo Paper 2.0 builds on the success
of the previous version (more than 5
million downloads) with an expanded range
of writing and drawing tools, including a
watercolour brush and pencil and a choice
of notebook styles for different tasks, such
as writing or sketching.
Wacom’s new digital stylus, the Intuos
Creative Stylus, makes the most of these
capabilities by providing a natural pen-
on-paper feeling, with 2,048 levels of
pressure sensitivity for greater control
and professional results when sketching,
illustrating and image editing.
Wacom claims that the brushed
aluminium stylus offers the best drawing
experience on iPads that are increasingly
being used to develop ideas and
experiment with concepts. It works with
popular drawing apps including Autodesk
SketchBook Pro for iPad, ArtRage (by
Ambient Design), Bamboo Paper, ProCreate
(by Savage Interactive) and Psykopaint.
The Intuos Creative Stylus is available in
two colour versions – black and blue/black
– and costs £84.99.
Winning design
Varicolor, the drawer filing system from Durable, has
won a red dot design award 2013 to go with its iF
Design Award 2013. The non-slip, stackable, colour-
coded boxes help keep work surfaces clear and
paperwork organised. They can also be kept side-by-
side on shelves and sideboards and in standard office
filing cabinets.
