SCANNERS
...there has been a clear shift
in the way people work and the
methods by which documents
are processed...
wear and tear.
“When a specific function, such as
scanning, is required and the job volume
is intense, users need a device designed
for that specific function. We are not
referring to ad hoc, occasional, walk-up
scanning but rather volume, paper-to-
digital conversions that many users
undertake.”
Increased mobility
According to InfoTrends, mobile devices
now outnumber personal computers by
three to one and mobile technologies
are changing the way people work. This
move toward increased mobility makes
the scanning function more important
than ever.
“We recognise that there has been a
clear shift in the way people work and
the methods by which documents are
processed because of the increasing use
of mobile devices and the cloud,” says
Searle.
Scanning documents enables them
to be stored and then quickly and easily
retrieved from virtually any location. Nor
are scanners solely for use in the office.
Today, there are many slimline and
portable models available, some of which
can operate PC-free, with connectivity,
transfer and preview options via USB,
memory card or Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi enabled
Wi-Fi enabled scanners allow
organisations to digitise documents in
the office or on the go, and send them
to the cloud, mobile devices or other
business workflows, where they can be
further processed.
Examples include Canon
CaptureOnTouch Mobile, a free
application that lets users scan directly
to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices
via aWi-Fi network; and Fujitsu’s
ScanSnap iX500, which now comes with
enhancedWi-Fi functionality, offering
Wi-Fi connectivity with Android and
Apple iOS mobile devices, a PC or Mac.

ROI calculator
PFU Imaging Solutions now offers
a free tool - the ROI calculator -
for measuring the amortization
period for companies considering
buying a document scanner or
already using one. The tool helps
small companies in particular,
to estimate not only the budget
impact of deploying a scanner but
also its effect on the environment.
The calculator illustrates three
kinds of ROI: materials cost only,
materials cost plus costs for filing
and searching for missing documents,
or a ‘green ROI’ based on paper
savings. The tool is available for free

A completely new take on scanning
The new Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 brings contact-
less scanning to document capture.
Users simply place items on a desk to capture
them. With no warm-up waiting time, it takes just
three seconds for the ScanSnap SV600 to be ready
to go to work.
The scanner offers the simple, intuitive, one
button operation that is the hallmark of the
ScanSnap series and can digitise bound or stapled
documents up to A3 size, such as notebooks,
newspapers, catalogues and business cards.
A continuous scanning feature allows it to
automatically capture another image as soon as
the page of a book or document is turned. Since
the originals lie face up, in contrast to a flatbed
scanner or copier, users can see the document while
scanning, thus making it easier to avoid crooked,
folded or covered pages.
