SHREDDERS
Security levels
ACCO Brands recommends shredding
all sensitive personal and commercial
information and has a number of
product solutions under its Rexel brand
(www.rexeleurope.com). Rexel offers a
comprehensive range from personal/
executive to large departmental
models. They say that one of the key
considerations when purchasing a
shredder is the level of security required.
Many organisations will deploy different
security level shredders depending upon
location; for example Finance and HR will
probably have the need to destroy highly
sensitive documents on a regular basis,
whilst general administration functions
may have a lower level requirement.
Fellowes offering includes shredders
for both home offce and business use.
Models such as the DS 500, 700 and
1200 are personal shredders with in-built
safety features and pull out bins for
convenient waste disposal. Safesense
technology, available on several models
including the DS1200, automatically
stops the shredder if a hand comes into
contact with the paper entry slot, while
the DS 700 and 500 feature Safetylock,
which disables the shredder and prevents
accidental activation.
Superior security deskside models –
the MS-460 and MS-450 – include both
SafeSense technology and Silentshred,
which minimises noise disruption in
shared working environments and offer
micro-shred cut functionality, which
shreds one piece of A4 paper into over
3,000 pieces.
A cross-cut shredding mechanism
reduces paper and other materials to
small particles that cannot be re-
assembled, providing for a higher level of
security than a shredder that simply cuts
documents into strips. Fellowes says that
general awareness about the different
technologies and of the added protection
that models with a higher security rating
can bring is growing. Sales tend to peak
around October, mainly due to activity
around NIDFPW. Price plays a factor in
consumers’ buying patterns – strip-cut
models cost less than cross-cut, but the
security of the latter is higher.
Another manufacturer with a strong
product line-up is Swordfsh, whose
recently launched GoECOlife shredder
range offers a genuinely green option
for document shredding in the home
or offce. All products are certifed
Carbon Neutral and have a zero carbon
footprint. And for even tighter protection,
the Swordfsh 800XXC Micro Cut
Shredder shreds an A4 sheet of paper
into 2,599 pieces. Perfect for destroying
commercially sensitive information, the
800XXC has added value features such
as the ability to shred credit cards and
up to eight sheets of paper. In addition,
a whisper-quiet sound level of only 53dB
allows shredding without disturbance.
