Developed as an affordable alternative to existing retail
digital signage, the AOPEN eTILE is a thin, multi-touch PC
based on Intel Core processor technology. It comes in two
sizes – 15.6 and 19in; doesn’t require a kiosk or enclosure;
has built-in cable management so no ports are visible to the
customer; and has 3G, 4G andWiFi options.
The eTILE’s Intel platform allows it to be used for a variety of
applications, from digital signage and full-sized video walls to point
of sale. When used for POS, it can be supplied with a secondary
ultra-slim touch screen for customer use. A powered USB port
enables scanners and credit card readers to be used without
additional plugs and cables.
Stephen Borg, global director of strategy & market
development at AOPEN, said: “The eTILE is a truly beautiful,
eye-catching device far from the hardware traditionally pushed
at retailers that has to be housed in clunky kiosks. The eTILE’s
commercial grade screen is ideal for playing any kind of digital
media in any lighting environment. It’s compelling to look at and
use and perfect for showcasing products and information.
“You can use the eTILE stand-alone or embed it into a table
and use it as a surface device. It’s highly robust due to being
completely contained, secure and tamper-proof, with a sealed
front for dust resistance and waterproof front panel. Its simple
plug and play features dramatically cut installation costs and time,
with no need for specific technical skills. The eTILE makes digital
painless and easy.”
Intel Active Management Technology allows retailers with POS
machines, digital signs or other intelligent devices to remotely
diagnose and quickly fix problems over their network.

Digital signage with a difference
3Doodler has begun shipping 3D Printing
pens to some of the 30,000 backers who
helped it raise more than $2.3 million
on crowdfunding site Kickstarter and has
started to take pre-orders from the general
public. The handheld pens let you create 3D
plastic objects out of ABS and PLA plastic by
drawing freehand or by tracing shapes from
templates. 3Doodler can be pre-ordered
for $99 plus $15 (or less) for shipping and
an international plug pack. Delivery is
estimated for February 2014.

Architectural Finishes, which
resemble both natural and
artificial materials, including
wood grain, stone, brushed metals
and carbon fibre effects. Shown
at 100% Design in London, the
E-Series is made without PVC and
requires no harsh chemicals for
maintenance.
Also on show at 100% Design
were Fasara Glass Finishes, which can
be used to add an etched, treated or
texturised look to interior glass doors
and the insides of windows for a
fraction of the cost of the real thing;
and Dichroic Glass Finishes, designed
to achieve the shimmering, colour-
shifting effect of coloured glass
without the expense.

Play on opening
Almost two-thirds of UK marketers believe the use of video cards
will increase in the next 12 months, according to a survey by
videocard producer Vidioh!. The cards, featuring a built-in screen
that automatically plays a video on opening, were seen as ‘unusual
and attention-grabbing’ by 64%, while 38% think they can ‘bring a
product or service to life’. The cards have a set functionality with no
buttons and capacity for just one video. The battery lasts up to one
hour and can be recharged with a mini USB cable. Prices start at
£37.75 per unit for cards with a 4.3in screen,
rising to £73.25 for a 10in screen.

Crowdsourced translations
A new crowdsourcing translation service has been launched in the UK
providing quick, affordable translation of small documents such as a one-off
email, a single web page, a job application or a sales message. Translia says
its service eliminates the minimum word counts and delays associated with
professional agencies, while providing better quality translations than the
machine-based services provided by large search engines. Drawing on the
services of 10,000 translators, the online service can turn a job around in just
three hours, with rates as low as £4 for a 50-word email.
