Even before the Olympics, watching TV was
the nation’s favourite way to unwind after a
day’s work, according to a survey by Avery.
The survey of 2,000 working adults was
commissioned in conjunction with Avery
Rewards, a year-long promotion offering
workers instantly redeemable vouchers
for some of the nation’s best loved brands
including Red Letter Days, New Look, Marks &
Spencer, HMV and Boots.
Cited by 43% of UK workers, relaxing in
front of the TV came top of the list, ahead of
online shopping, cooking, watching a DVD and
opening a bottle of wine.
The survey revealed big differences in how
men and women choose to relax. A quarter
(27%) of women admitted to snacking on
chocolate and other indulgent foods as a
way to unwind, compared with just 11% of
men.Women also favour reading, shopping
and opening a bottle of wine, while men like
running, cycling and playing computer games.
Avery Rewards codes in packs of qualifying
products can be exchanged for vouchers
at www.averyrewards.co.uk. These can be
redeemed instantly, stored up or used to make
donations to one of Avery’s chosen charities.
Any customer who registers online will
automatically be entered into a quarterly prize
draw.

Charities and social enterprises are missing
out on a market that could generate an
income of £775 million and create 38,771
jobs for disadvantaged people, The Camden
Society claims.
ICM research published by the charity reveals
that 3% of workers who currently bring in food
from home would buy their lunch from social
enterprises like The Camden Society’s Unity
Kitchen chain if the option were available.
As the average worker spends £4.54 each
day on lunch, this represents a potential market
worth over £3.3m every day – enough, says
The Camden Society, to support over 5,538
new catering social enterprises with a similar
annual turnover to an average Unity Kitchen
(£140,000). As each Unity Kitchen employs on
average 7 people, there is the potential to create
an additional 38,771 jobs.
Denise Largin, chief executive of The Camden
Society and Unity Kitchen, said: “The public
clearly demand more choice for their lunch and
want to feed their social conscience as well as
their hunger. This news should be welcomed
by the whole social enterprise sector. We are
urging similar organisations to make the most
of this window of opportunity and tap in to this
market.”
She added: “Thanks to the new Public
Services Act, the public sector now needs to
consider the social value of all its catering
suppliers, which bodes well for organisations like
ours.”
Unity Kitchen uses the funds it generates
from catering services to provide employment,
paid apprenticeships and training opportunities
for local people with disabilities, many of whom
would otherwise depend on state benefits.
The chain started in 2010 and now has six
outlets, the largest of which supplies canteen
and in-house catering services to Southwark
Council at its head office in Tooley Street.
Councillor Claire Hickson, cabinet member
for Communities and Economic Development,
said: “The Unity Kitchen project at Tooley
Street has proved to be a really valuable
asset. The kitchen provides invaluable
work opportunities for people with
disabilities, creating jobs and benefiting
the local economy. I would encourage
other organisations to support or set up
these schemes in their own area.”
