Leeds Building Society (LBS) is looking forward
to an 18-month return on investment after
implementing a second generation digital
mailroom solution based on OPEX scanners
and mstore electronic document management
software from the Arena Group.
The UK’s 5th largest building society, with assets
of £9.9 billion, almost 700,000 members and 65
branches, is using the solution to scan more than
5,000 items of incoming mail each day.
Tim Lancelot of the Arena Group, which has
been working with Leeds BS since 2004, says the
implementation will help improve customer service,
compliance and the control of information, whilst
also reducing costs.
He said: “The Opex hardware and Arena’s
mstore software work seamlessly together to give
the fastest possible mailbag-to-desk process with
maximum automation.”
Integration of incoming mail with the building
society’s core database systems makes accurate
information available to customer service staff
much sooner than was previously possible; removes
the need to transport and deliver large volumes of
post; and gives LBS peace of mind from knowing
that all documents are securely stored and audited
in line with FSA guidelines.
Paul Thompson, Document Services Manager at
Leeds Building Society, said: “We set a three-phase
plan to test and run the overall electronic capture
process and we can already see tangible and
significant results. We have uploaded some 75% of
legacy files whilst streamlining the intake of new
material which amounts to approximately 5,000
units per day.”
He added: “I especially like the ability of the
system to recognise different types of document
and various optical character systems such as
barcodes, OCR and OMR. Given that we have
something like 700 different types of document,
the potential for fast and smooth processing is
enormous.”

T-Mobile Austria calls time
on paper labels
Following a successful trial in 11 stores,
T-Mobile is rolling out ZBD e-paper displays to
all of its Austrian mobile phone outlets where
it will be used instead of manually cut labels to
display prices for phones and call packages.
The solution is based on ZBD’s mid-sized epop
500 displays plus pricing software that allows
T-Mobile to update prices centrally rather than on a
store-by-store basis.
Klaus Slamanig, vice president of Shops at
T-Mobile Austria, said: “We have saved more than
40% on material costs and employee hours in each
store since implementing the ZBD solution. Printing
labels on paper was not efficient or up to date,
nor did it make sense to have staff replacing paper
labels when they could be talking to customers
about the best deals. ZBD’s wireless system
transmits accurate pricing and product information
to each store within seconds, cutting out wasteful
manual pricing activities for good.”
Another benefit of ZBD e-paper is the ability to
display more information about handsets and call
packages than is possible with paper labels.

How to slash your
mailing bill
Neopost has produced a new white
paper explaining how businesses can
cut costs by taking advantage of the
huge discounts of almost 50% that
are now available to mail users who
prepare their post in a certain way.
Further cost savings can be achieved
by using mailing equipment and software
solutions to eliminate waste and
unnecessary expense at every stage of
the mailing process, from the opening
and distribution of incoming post to
the production, postage and delivery of
outgoing mail.
Neopost marketing director Andy
MacKenzie said: “In an age of smartphones
and social networks, the post remains an
important channel that can help build
relationships and generate business. Each
day, Royal Mail delivers 59 million letters,
packets and parcels to 29 million UK
addresses, almost 9 out of 10 of which
are sent by businesses and the public
sector. We have produced this new white
paper to help organisations of all sizes
think more strategically about their postal
communications.Whether you send
5 letters a day or 5,000, there are big
savings to be made.”
