Lexmark broke new ground
with its Genesis all-in-one,
which uses digital camera
technology instead of a
conventional CCD scanner to
produce superfast scans in as
few as 3 seconds. However,
the need to place items
beneath a lid (in Genesis’
case, a vertical one) limits its
possible applications.
Now HP is showing what
can be achieved with its new
HP TopShot Scanning feature,
included for the frst time on the
HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275
MFP. This uses an 8 megapixel
digital camera embedded in a
hinged arm that rises above the
scanning platform to capture
six images of a document or 3D
object, from which a single high
quality image is produced.
HP says the new feature
is particularly useful for
people wanting to post
images of 3D objects online
including auction and
e-commerce sites, not least
because bundled scanning
software enables users to
remove backgrounds from
scans without the need for
a separate photo editing
package.
Direct web access and a
choice of free HP print apps
means that users can upload
scans to the web for storage
and sharing online directly from
the MFP with no need to turn
on a PC. HP has sold 10 million
cloud-enabled, web-connected
printers since launching its frst
models in 2009.
The HP TopShot LaserJet Pro
M275 MFP is an entry-level,
ePrint-enabled wireless colour
laser printer/copier/scanner
with print speeds of 17ppm
black and 4ppm colour.
In addition, HP has
announced two new e-Print
enabled business inkjets, the HP
Offcejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One
and the HP Offcejet Pro 8100
ePrinter, offering 50% lower
running costs than comparable
laser printers.

HP takes scanning to a new level
Colour laser shipments experienced a year-
on-year decline of 3% in the second quarter
of 2011, according to the latest
International Data Corporation
(IDC) Worldwide Quarterly
Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker.
This was the frst quarter of
negative growth for colour laser
sales since 2009.
Monochrome laser continued
its positive performance of the last
six quarters with 5% year-on-year
growth and close to 7.9 million units
shipped. All regions except Western Europe and
the U.S. saw year-on-year growth in monochrome
shipments.
In total, laser enjoyed 4% year-on-year growth
in unit shipments, gaining a market share of 32%.
Inkjet technology remains the dominant technology,
with 63% share, despite the lowest level of unit
shipments since 2Q09.
The overall market for inkjet and laser print
devices declined for the frst time since Q1, 2010,
with a 0.3% reduction in unit shipments as weak
demand in developed regions cancelled out a 6%
rise in emerging markets.

Canon has added new A4 models to its imageRUNNER series to meet growing demand
for high speed black and white A4 MFDs. According to Infosource, the market for such
devices grew 15% in the frst quarter of this year. The imageRUNNER 1100 (33ppm)
and 1700 (30/40/50ppm) series are designed for busy workgroups that don’t need
an A3 print/copy capability but still require the productivity features of a high end
device, including integration with Canon’s uniFLOW print management software and
eMaintenance and iWMC solutions for remote management.
