Kyocera is warning schools
and universities of the hidden
costs of using third party
consumables after tests by
TÜV Rheinland revealed them
to be less reliable than original
supplies.
The tests, carried out in
accordance with ISO/IEC
19798 standards, compared
the performance of Kyocera
Genuine Toner to three third
party toner brands. In total, 200
toner cartridges were used and
300,000 pages printed on three
identical KYOCERA FS-C5250DN
printers.
Cartridges were judged
on print quality, including
blackness/lightness, contrast,
adhesion, background, ghosting
and evenness; waste toner; the
number of misprints; mechanical
errors; and leakage.
In the tests, third party toners
produced up to nine times more
non-usable prints and an inferior
level of evenness than Kyocera
Genuine Toner, which provided
consistent output throughout the
cartridge life and greater colour
intensity.
Kyocera Genuine Toner
caused zero printer down-time,
in contrast to one of the tested
brands which damaged four
developer units in two printers.
Nor did they have any leakage,
unlike cartridges from two of
the three brands tested (two
cartridges from Toner Brand A
and one from Toner Brand B).
Third party toners also
created up to 73% more waste
than Kyocera Genuine Toner and
did not always provide everything
required. For example, 65 out of
69 boxes of Toner Brand A did
not include a waste toner box.
Commenting on the findings,
Bernhard Koll, Product Manager,
Kyocera Document Solutions
Europe, said: “They show that it
is important for our customers
to look not only at the purchase
price of toner, but also at
indirectly related costs, such
as additional maintenance
requirements and the time and
expense of misprints and non-
usable prints.”
Kyocera Genuine Toner can
be identified by the Kyocera logo
printed on the packaging and
moulded into the toner container
itself and by the holographic
‘genuine toner identification
label’ on the packaging. An RFID
chip inside the toner container
enables a printer to recognise if
Kyocera Genuine Toner is being
used.
New for 2013, KYOCERA Document Solutions has launched the
FS-2100DN, an A4 mono printer from KYOCERA’s 6th generation of
ECOSYS technology, and the FS-C8500DN A3 colour printer.
The printers, which are both ideal in an educational environment, are
available to members of the NEPA framework at the same price as their
predecessors, the FS-2020DN and the FS-8500DN.
Part of KYOCERA’s 6th generation of award-winning ECOSYS
sustainable print technology, the FS-2100DN is a compact A4 mono printer
with a print speed of 40ppm; Gigabit Ethernet; and a paper capacity of
2,600 sheets. Energy consumption is 30% lower than its predecessor.
The FS-C8650DN A3 colour printer is based on KYOCERA’s award-
winning TASKalfa technology. It prints high quality colour at speeds of
55ppm; has a paper capacity of 7,650 sheets; supports banner printing;
and offers a wide range of paper-handling options including tri-folding and
an optional booklet finisher/folder.
In addition, Kyocera and its
partners can help organisations
make use of MFP functionality
to reduce print volumes, improve
administrative processes and
save on postage. A primary
school, for example, could
use the scanning capability
on an MFP to scan letters and
reports into an electronic school
management system or to an
intranet for viewing by parents.
Solutions-ready
Kyocera devices provide the
perfect platform for delivering
this kind of functionality. Built-in
HyPAS technology fully integrates
the MFPs with embedded or
server-based solutions for
simpler device management and
improved cost control.
Kyocera’s solutions portfolio
includes many of the most
popular applications used in the
education sector today, including
the SIMS school management
system; PaperCut, Equitrac,
Safecom and OCM International
It’s official: Genuine is Best
user authentication, secure
print, accounting and print
management solutions; and
Autostore electronic capture and
routing software.
Another solution, likely to
prove popular with students,
is Kyocera Mobile Print. This
enables students and teachers
to send files, scans and images
from an Apple iOS or Android
device to selected Kyocera
network printers and MFPs and
vice versa, with the ability to
track print jobs when accounting
is enabled at the device.
Kyocera Document
Solutions has already
helped many customers
cut paper consumption by
at least 25%, reduce print
costs by 30% or more and
half print-related energy
consumption. To find out how
it can help you achieve similar
savings, please visit
