Simpler printing for mobile
professionals was highlighted
as one of the benefits of
Microsoft Windows 8.1 at
the company’s TechEd North
America event, held in New
Orleans on June 3-6.
In his keynote address, Iain
McDonald, partner director
of program management
for Windows, outlined new
networking capabilities
in Windows 8.1 that take
advantage of NFC-tagged and
Wi-Fi connected devices.
These include NFC tap-to-
pair printing, which lets you
print by tapping a Windows 8.1
device against any enterprise
printer that has been NFC-
enabled with the addition of
an NFC tag; and Wi-Fi Direct
printing that lets you print from
a Windows 8.1 device to a Wi-Fi
Direct printer without the need
for additional print drivers or
software.
NFC and Wi-Fi Direct can
also be used to pair a
Windows 8.1 tablet or
computer to a Miracast-
enabled wireless display
enabling users
to
display content without
the need for wires or dongles.
See page 12 for details of
Samsung’s new NFC-enabled
laser printers.

Toshiba TEC has achieved
PAS2060 carbon neutrality
status for its UK operation.
The company has run a Carbon
Zero scheme in association
with co2balance since 2009
when it began to offset carbon
generated in the design,
manufacture, shipping and
use of its printers and MFPs.
Recently, it extended the
scheme to cover its entire
UK operation, including
emissions associated with
gas and electricity usage,
water and waste, business
travel and accommodation.
Toshiba neutralises its carbon
footprint by buying credits from
carbon-saving projects run by
co2balance such as the supply
of energy-efficient stoves to
villages in Kenya and the repair
and maintenance of bore holes
in Uganda (illustrated).

Toshiba TEC UK now carbon neutral
One in three workers (36%) admits to walking away from a
printer that suffers a paper jam or runs out of ink/toner.
Half (47%) said they did so because they didn’t know how to
fix the problem.
According to Naysan Firoozmand, vice chair of the Association of
Business Psychologists, the reason could be more deep-seated.
“There are a number of psychological theories that might
explain this behaviour – one being ‘social loafing’. In its simplest
form this means that the presence of others results in a decrease
in individual effort,” he said.
“Other psychological explanations are ‘bystander apathy’ and
‘diffusion of responsibility’. Bystander apathy is where observers
of a given situation that warrants their attention do not step in to
assist; whilst ‘diffusion of responsibility’ is the theory that people
are less likely to offer support to someone if there are others
present because they view their responsibility as being shared and
therefore are less personally responsible.”
One solution is to give someone in the office overall responsibility
for printers, with training so that they can resolve any problems that
occur.
The survey was conducted by Cartridge World to promote its
new Business Direct service, which combines same-day delivery of
replacement consumables with free printer audits, training and advice.

Online printer specialist Printerbase celebrated its 10th
anniversary in June. The Ashton-under-Lyne-based company,
now one of the UK’s largest suppliers of printers, MFPs and
consumables, was set up by Peter Knight in 2003. From the
start, it based its appeal on competitive pricing and high levels
of printer expertise and advice.
