SCANNERS
Growing demand for network
scanners
To meet growing demand for Ethernet-
connected network scanners – up 100%
across Europe in 2014, according to
Infosource – both Kodak Alaris and Fujitsu
have launched new network scanners
designed for simple PC-free operation.
Kodak Alaris has updated its Scan
Station 700 Series with two new models
offering 40% faster scan speeds of 70
pages per minute. They are the KODAK Scan
Station 710 for general office use and the
KODAK Scan Station 730EX, specifically
designed for systems integrators (SIs) and
independent software vendors (ISVs).
Designed for use by non-technical staff,
the Kodak scanners have a 9.7in colour
touch screen for simple PC-free operation.
Users just have to walk
up to a device, put
their documents in
the feeder and press
scan. Scans can
be sent
to multiple destinations simultaneously
including network folders, printers, FTP sites,
email and Microsoft SharePoint.
A voice attachment feature lets users
record verbal instructions and attach them
to a scanned document. Accessories include
the KODAK Scan Station Keyboard and A3
and Legal (A4) flatbed scanner units.
Fujitsu’s new model, the N7100 network
scanner, has a scan speed of 25 pages per
minute and processes images 10 times
faster than its predecessor for near-instant
views of scans.
Other enhancements include a new
active feeding system offering reliable sheet
separation in stacks of mixed material from
40-209gsm; new PaperStream software;
and two USB ports for peripherals, such as a
keyboard or IC reader.

Brother sales outstrip market
growth
Brother has refreshed its desktop scanner
range after reporting a 58% increase in
scanner sales in January to September
2014, comfortably outstripping overall
market growth of 15% year-on-year (source:
Infosource).
The ADS-2100e and ADS-2600We
are designed for small to medium-sized
businesses scanning up
to 1,500 pages a day.
Useful features include
improved smartphone
and tablet
connectivity
on the ADS-
2600We;
Kofax
compatibility,
vital for customers
within the financial services, insurance,
government and healthcare sectors; and
full Brother Solutions Interface support,
enabling ISVs and developers to create
bespoke solutions.
Lexmark to acquire Kofax
Lexmark has announced its intention
to merge with capture and process
management company Kofax, effectively
doubling the size of its enterprise
software unit to a $700 million business
as it continues to make the transition
from printer hardware company to
solutions business. Under the terms of
the agreement, Lexmark will acquire all
outstanding shares in Kofax for $11.00 per
share in cash, putting a value on Kofax of
approximately $1 billion.
An effective ECM solution
involves five key processes:
Capture.
Scan, capture and convert paper
documents, creating electronic files that can be
shared, processed and uploaded to an online
repository.
Manage
.
Reduce the cost of routine workflows by
automating manual processes and integrating back-
end operations. Ensure authorisation is given before
any document becomes part of the content repository.
Store
.
Maintain control through approvals or revisions
and reduce the cost of maintaining archives to comply
with regulations. Choose whether to manage the
document repository in-house, use a cloud solution,
or deliver a central portal that enables users to
search and access multiple data sources securely and
efficiently.
Preservation
.
In addition to defining how documents
and information are stored and accessed, consider
how long you need to retain information.
Deliver
.
Access to information should be seamless,
providing extensive search capabilities and link to line-
of-business applications. Give mobile professionals
real-time access to stored information, see the
status of current workflow processes and reduce
time-consuming manual tasks by automating OCR
conversion, document routing and annotation.
...continued
communication processes.
Effective information
management is not a quick fix. How
well the available services align with
operational and business needs,
technical considerations, financial
savings, risk factors and successful
strategies for commissioning and
implementation require thorough
evaluation and are key factors in
planning and commissioning fit-for-
purpose solutions.
At Konica Minolta, we have a
team of consultants who carry out
comprehensive business process
optimisation utilising Lean Six-Sigma
principles.
This approach enables
organisations to compartmentalise
requirements into manageable
phases and prioritise areas of their
operations that offer the greatest
return and/or have the most
immediate impact on other, lesser
processes.
Comprehensive organisational
and strategic factors will need
to be taken into account and, in
many cases, a number of legacy
systems may need to be integrated
and different business needs
accommodated.
By providing a secure, single
portal where all content can be
accessed instantly, regardless of
where the document originated or is
stored – even if it’s on an individual’s
personal desktop file – ECM ensures
that information is shared fully within
an organisation, leading to greater
efficiency, better risk management
and faster decision-making.
