Xaar held up as example of UK manufacturing
Xaar, a leading developer of inkjet technology and manufacturer of industrial
inkjet printheads, was one of 38 British businesses selected for the
‘Make it in Great Britain’ exhibition at the Science Museum, London.
Running from July 24 to September 9, the exhibition was the culmination
of the ‘Make it in Great Britain’ campaign launched last year by the
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to dispel the myth that
Britain ‘doesn’t make anything any more’. Ted Wiggans, Xaar Operations Director,
said: “Xaar is a great UK manufacturing success story. Our printhead technology was invented in
the UK in 1990, we went public in 1997 and today we have a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant
in Huntingdon and employ over 450 highly skilled staff globally.”

Preton has been awarded a
patent for Pixel Optimizer
technology that removes
overlapping pixels during the
printing process to cut toner
consumption and print costs
by up to 35%.
Pixel Optimizer intelligently
identifies and deletes
overlapping pixels where the
space left can be filled by excess
toner or ink from adjacent
pixels. In this way, the software
can reduce toner consumption
by approximately 35% without
visibly impacting print quality.
Most competitor solutions
cut toner consumption by
reducing the number of dots
per inch (DPI) or half-toning.
The problem with this approach,
says Preton, is that savings are
applied universally (i.e. to text
and graphics) and visibly reduce
the output quality of printed
documents. This is also the case
with ‘draft’ or ‘economy’ mode
settings offered by print drivers.
In contrast, Pixel Optimizer
lets you apply different savings
levels to different elements
within a printed document. This
allows higher savings levels to
be applied to text, which is not
sensitive to pixel reduction, than
to graphics content, which is.
Pixel Optimizer is the core
technology inside PretonSaver
software which delivers average
cost savings of 25%-35% without
any compromise in quality.
Preton claims that for a large
enterprise, savings can reach
$150,000 to $200,000 per
month.
The software is also used by
Managed Print Service (MPS)
providers to control and lower
fixed toner costs and improve
pricing flexibility.
Holly Muscolino, Research
Director at IDC, said: “We believe
that Preton will continue to see
success globally. As the MPS
market matures, both suppliers
and their customers will be
looking for additional avenues
for greater efficiencies and
cost savings. The industry will
embrace technologies such as
Pixel Optimizer as a competitive
differentiator and a way to drive
up margins.”

The Microsoft Research Printing Dress is almost certainly
not the new printing application that the industry craves.
In fact, it should be called the Anti-Printing Dress, as it is
really a form of temporary display for transient thoughts
or tweets. Winner of the Best Concept and Best in Show
at the 2011 International Symposium on Wearable
Computers (ISWC) and on display in Bloomingdale’s
department store during this year’s New York Fashion
Week, the prototype dress is made out of black and white
rice paper and high tech components that allow users to
type messages on laser-cut keys sewn into the bodice.
With the help of four integrated circuit boards and a
notebook and projector, tweets are displayed on the skirt
for the world to see.
