01732 759725 14 BULLETIN STX Next partners with appliedAI STX Next, a global leader in IT consulting, has partnered with Europe’s largest initiative for applied artificial intelligence to deliver the appliedAI Management Suite, a management product that increases AI value creation and facilitates EU AI Act compliance. The solution makes risk assessment and AI portfolio optimisation easier and will drive progress for the next generation of AI initiatives. The crucial role of AI Appetite for the potential of AI projects is at an all-time high, according to research conducted by the Cloud Industry Forum, which revealed that 42% of businesses now consider it to be their most important IT project, ranking ahead of other considerations such as security, IT sustainability (both 40%) and controlling costs (38%). David Terrar, CEO of the Cloud Industry Forum, said: “As with any new technology, AI was met with some scepticism during its rise to prominence. The data from this year’s report indicates that much of the remaining scepticism has entirely been quashed. Businesses are now further informed and fully on board with AI’s ability to reduce costs, save time and enhance their offerings.” AI’s prominence in modern business is also supported by the finding that 96% of organisations believe AI will be at least somewhat important to their organisation in the next five years. This figure is a significant increase from 2023, when 86% of organisations reported the same. Though AI projects are not limited to generative AI, it remains a popular form of adoption. 94% of organisations report that they are either planning to or are already using generative AI. Specifically, 62% of businesses report that it is already in use across at least some parts of their organisation. For many businesses, the motivations for adoption are clear. 96% of respondents in this year’s report said that generative AI will or has already benefited their organisation, including improving data analytics (46%), customer service (45%) and/or products and services (43%). Terrar continued: “Generative AI has perhaps become the most well-known use case for AI, largely spurred by the ways that large language models have powered the AI assistants and chatbots that are becoming ever more commonplace in our lives. For businesses, generative AI has much more potential in its ability to power intelligent analytics and supplement the role of humans in the workplace. “For cloud service providers in particular, generative AI can and will be an important tool for improving their offerings in several ways. Not only will it assist in personalising offerings for users, but it will also help potential customers to better understand what cloud can do for them. For vendors, generative AI will be vital in offering innovative solutions to challenges that have historically been complex, which will help optimise workloads and unlock new opportunities for growth.” https://cloudindustryforum.org Sage expands AI-driven AP automation Sage has announced new enhancements and updates for Sage Intacct customers globally, to streamline financial operations and enhance security worldwide. 01732 759725 18 WORKPLACE Julia Thomas, Head of Channel Marketing at Ricoh, picks the tools she uses every day and couldn’t do her job without I couldn’t do my job without... w Exercise I try (but don’t always manage to) fit in a bit of exercise every day. When I’m working from home, I usually do 20 minutes of weights at lunchtime, or if I’m in the office or meeting with partners I often take a quick walk. I find it helps me to reset and refocus and sets me up to remain productive during the afternoon. e Office time Hybrid working is fantastic, I love it, but I think it’s really important to stay connected to people. I really enjoy time in the office with my colleagues – whether that’s in our London HQ or Staines office, as well as visiting partners at their premises. Nothing beats personal interaction, and I often find the best ideas come from when you’re all together and collaborating. That said, apart from the train journey there and back, those days typically tend to be my least productive in terms of getting work done! r Monday morning call Every Monday at 10am we have a team call. It involves the entire marketing team and it’s agile so doesn’t last more than 30 minutes. But it really sets us all up for the week ahead, helps us understand where the priorities are and ensure that we’re all aligned. q Music in my ears While some people might need peace and quiet to really focus on a task, I’m the opposite. I like to listen to loud music, BUT it has to be in my ears. So, when I need to get organised or want to be at my most productive, I rely on my Apple AirPods and Spotify to blast out my favourite house or dance music, I find it really helps me to concentrate and get work done quickly. t Teams app I work flexible hours at Ricoh and I find having the Teams app on my phone really convenient. It might not be for everyone, but it works for me, ensures I’m always accessible and helps me to remain connected. y Hotdesking Like many companies, when we plan to go into the office, we have to book a desk and car parking, we can’t just turn up. I use the Ricoh Spaces app, I can see who else will be in, pre-book a desk next to my colleagues, or a meeting room if I need one. It really helps in terms of planning my week and making sure that when I’m in the office, I can get to see the people I need to. www.ricoh.co.uk Julia Thomas

01732 759725 INTERVIEW 20 Matt Houlden, Operations Director, Vantage Online shares his experiences over the past decade, what he’s learned, and the highs and the lows of our unique and challenging industry A decade in print hasn’t it? At Vantage and Asolvi we had it easier than many did and on a personal level I was lucky to avoid some of the challenges and losses that many others experienced, but not something any of us want to experience again, I’m sure. PITR: What (or who) has had the greatest impact in the sector in the last 10 years? MH: I would have to say the inexorable rise in cloud computing. The pace of change has been remarkable and, on balance, the impact on our products, our business and the ability to deploy solutions at speed and at scale is something that is almost unimaginable compared to when I started all those years ago with Service Accent. PITR: If you could change one thing about the last decade, what would it be? MH: I’d like some of my hair back! But other than that, there really isn’t anything of any real substance that I’d like to change. PITR: What has been your proudest moment of the past 10 years? MH: The birth of my daughter. Like many other parents of children who are on the autistic spectrum, she has given me a fundamentally different perspective on life. She’s also a bit bonkers but makes me laugh every single day. All children are special, but she’s a constant source of inspiration as well as a reminder that a life well-lived cannot be counted in bits of paper, financial achievements or many of the other things we are conditioned to view as ‘successes’. PITR: Sum up the decade in three words. MH: Resilience. Innovation. Connectivity. https://www.asolvi.com/vantage-online PrintIT Reseller (PITR): You’ve been working in the print and IT industry for more than ten years. What led you to enter the sector? Matt Houlden (MH): From an early age, I’ve always enjoyed taking things apart, understanding how they worked and then putting them back together. A close friend worked for a local copier dealer and told me they were on the lookout for a junior engineer. Fresh out of A-levels and with no clearly defined plan in my head it sounded interesting, so I read up a bit, blagged my way through an interview and practical exercise, and landed the job! The first few months were spent in the workshop prepping new, reconditioning returned machines, and attending training courses. And I got my first company car! That business used an early service management and billing system and there’s a straight line from there, to working with Tony Milford, Vantage, and then Asolvi. PITR: What was your first job? MH: My first foray into the world of ‘proper jobs’ was working a couple of evenings a week, plus Saturdays/ Sundays in a Bradford clothes shop. Paid in cash every week…lived for the weekend. Good times!! PITR: What has been the high point of the decade? MH: Bringing our Vantage Online solution to market at the start of 2017. For me personally, it was an immensely proud moment to see this project through from inception to completion. Three years of hard work, early starts, late nights, occasional arguments, and plenty of laughs along the way. PITR: And the low point? MH: It’s got to be COVID and lockdown, Matt Houlden
