In September Océ introduced its new
VarioPrint DP line of light production
printers. Offering print speeds of
110, 120 and 135 pages per minute,
these are ideal replacements
for existing mono machines or
productive upgrades for CRDs
wanting to make the transition from
offset to digital B&W printing.
The VarioPrint DP line features
a number of core innovations and
adaptations of existing technologies that
Océ has combined in a print process that is
claimed to be more stable than electro-
photographic alternatives and immune
to variables such as temperature and
humidity. These include:
• Océ Direct Press.
The combination
of Océ Direct Press technology, which
charges the surface of the drum from the
inside, and monocomponent toner with a
magnetic iron core removes the need for
an external laser or LED light source and
the related problems of static and ‘toner
jump’. This results in the cleanest possible
prints, no toner waste, a more compact
engine design and no ozone emissions.
In the next stage of the process, the
toner image is transferred to a transfer
belt and then pressed into a pre-heated
page at a low fusing temperature. Because
the image is pressed into the paper, there
is no residue toner on documents; print
quality is better and more consistent with
an offset look and feel; and toner doesn’t
crack or flake when creased or applied to
textured paper.
• Océ Heat Xchange.
Heat exchange
coils recycle heat from printed to
pre-printed pages, reducing the energy
needed to heat pre-printed sheets and
cool printed output by 30%. This process
minimises heat emissions for a more
comfortable working environment and
contributes to a TEC (Typical Energy
Consumption) value 10-80% below that
of other mid-production systems.
• Océ EnergyLogic.
This new technology
enables the print engine to speed up
or slow down during operation so that
it can handle mixed media (i.e. light
and heavy paper stock) in a single print
run without stopping. It also enables
a device to start printing before it has
n
The device produced the best image quality
in default settings of models tested to date,
including smooth halftones and crisp text and
fine lines. In fact, the unit is the first device to
receive a five-star rating for image quality since
BLI began its field testing of production units.
n
Equally impressive are the unit’s paper-handling
capabilities, which make setting up custom
media, switching between media, and managing
changing media demands over the course of a
day’s workload seamless and much less prone to
error than with competing units tested by BLI.
n
The advanced job build, pre-flight processing and
subset handling capabilities of the Océ VarioPrint
135 make complex workflows much easier to
handle than other systems tested by BLI.
n
For print users, ease of use was another highlight,
thanks to its excellent job submission options,
high-quality pre-press capabilities and user-
friendly queue management. The Docbox, which is
new to this VarioPrint product family, is very user
friendly and offers extensive reprint-on-demand
options including advanced subset workflow
handling.
High praise
PrintIT
was not the only one impressed by the Océ VarioPrint DP Line: after printing
87,841 A4 impressions on 10 different media types, independent testing laboratory Buyers
Laboratory Inc (BLI) gave the 135ppm model 5 Stars for image quality – making it the first
production machine to receive such an accolade. BLI also praised the printer for its ease of
use, pre-flight and job preparation, as the following report extracts show:
reached its optimum print speed for
a rapid first page out time. Instead of
waiting until the engine has reached its
rated speed, a device will start printing
at 60ppm, which means that you could
have 200 sheets in the output tray in the
time it takes other machines to warm up.
Taken together, these technologies make the
VarioPrint DP line a compelling addition to
the monochrome light production market,
offering customers high quality output,
lower energy costs and greater reliability for
a lower total cost of ownership.
