FOUNTAIN PENS

Parker sets a
revolution
Writing with a fountain pen is a completely
different experience than putting pen to
paper with a common or garden rollerball,
ballpoint or gel pen; they are comfortable,
you can write without exerting excess
pressure and the end result is usually more
pleasing to the eye. Yet, as a nation have we
lost the art of fne writing?
Parker pen company was born. 1894
saw the creation of the unique Lucky
Curve ink feed system – a technological
breakthrough that enabled an
unparalleled fow of ink from the barrel
to the pen and, throughout the course
of the next decade, Parker continued
with inventions which included the frst
jointless pen, whose components were
seamlessly encased inside the barrel of
the pen, thereby eliminating leakage.
But it was the introduction of
the modern plastic ink cartridge (by
Waterman) in 1953 that revolutionised
the fountain pen industry.
Parker 5TH Technology
Parker is now attempting to gain a new
generation’s interest in fne writing by
creating a new pen that is as beautiful
to use as it is to look at. The latest
innovation consists of a cutting-edge
refll tip and an engraved metallic hood
– together they constitute Parker 5TH
Technology, the next generation in pens.
The Parker 5TH Technology – so
named as it offers a genuine ffth way of
writing, following decades of fne writing
being led by the fountain pen, ballpoint,
rollerball and the mechanical pencil,
was born out of extensive research into
consumers’ needs. This work revealed
an expectation for a single pen that
combines the value of a metallic modern
hood design, the superior experience of a
soft writing feel and the convenience of
a clean refll.
Parker says its 5TH Technology is the
world’s frst writing system that
answers these needs.
The result is
an effortlessly smooth, smart gliding
feeling that adjusts to your writing style
after just a few words. The innovation
behind Parker 5TH Technology
combines the ease of writing with a
stylish, high-end design, creating the
perfect on-the-go pen that can travel
with you anywhere.
Global President Jean-Charles HITA
says, “Parker has been changing people’s
lives through its innovations in the
fne writing category for more than
120 years. Now we are doing it again.
Combining style with technology, we
are offering a solution for those who
have not yet entered the world of fne
writing pens, but once tried, they will
defnitely become fans forever!”

The forefather of the modern fountain
pen – the Regular – was developed by
Lewis EdsonWaterman in New York in
1883, when a temperamental pen lost
him an important contract.
Over 100 years ago,Walter A Sheaffer
is said to have transformed the world
of pen and ink with the invention of
an ingenious lever fll fountain pen.
Sheaffer's unique slim metal lever made
it possible to fll straight from the ink
bottle in one clean and easy step. The
new system was patented and in 1912
Sheaffer staked his life savings to go into
the writing instrument business.
Other inventions followed, including
the Touchdown flling system in 1949
and the inlaid nib in 1959. Sheaffer is
now a division of BIC and still produces
a comprehensive range of pens from
handcrafted laque fnishes to modern and
classic styles.
The Parker legacy began inWisconsin
in the US in 1888. George Safford
