Should you or your company be worried about identity fraud? The simple answer is
yes. Identity thieves use a host of methods including raiding the bins of individuals
and businesses in an attempt to find whole or partially destroyed documents
containing personal information. Carelessly discarded confidential client
information, credit card and sales receipts, personnel or payroll records, could end
up in the wrong hands.

a steel pin through a hard disk to make
it unreadable. Both models are the same
size as a typical office shredder and

Paper jams, having to empty the bin
frequently, the requirement to hand feed
individual sheets and noise levels, are the
most common frustrations that people
have with shredders. But the good news
is that manufacturers have taken note
and the latest solutions on the market
address these key customer pain points.
Fellowes has unveiled brand new
Jam Blocker technology which prevents
overfeeding. As paper is inserted, the
throat sensor measures paper thickness
to eliminate jams, if overfed, a red
indicator light will appear
and the shredder will not start until
excess paper is removed. This innovative
jam prevention feature has been
developed for the firm’s new line of
paper shredders designed for home
office/desk side which were launched
this month.
Fellowes shredders also incorporate
a number of other key features that
they claim revolutionise the shredding
experience, including patented 100%
Jam Proof technology preventing
overloading and ensuring maximum
productivity via unique usage indicators
and an intelligent auto-correct
mechanism. SafeSense technology
automatically stops the shredder
when the throat area is touched
during operation for user safety and
SilentShred Performance provides ultra-
quiet operation and consistent noise
quality to minimise office disruption.

Following the success of the Rexel
Auto+ 100 which automatically shreds
up to 100 (fastened) sheets at a time,
the firm has introduced a further four
Auto Shred models. The new range
offers the ability to shred from 65
to 550 sheets (70gsm) in one load.
Simply load the paper, close the lid and
continue working – the Rexel Auto Feed
models automatically start shredding
plus, Mercury technology prevents
paper jams.

Elcoman has launched the new
high capacity, high security KOBRA
310 TS-AF which also shreds CDs/
DVDs and credit cards. Available in four
versions, key features include a lockable
cover and high security lock for extra
protection, touch screen panel for ease
of use and an energy smart power
saving system.

Developing a corporate culture in
which security is recognised as a
high priority and ensuring that all
important documents are shredded
and not binned is key. Companies
have legal responsibilities under the
Data Protection Act and are expected
to destroy personal information
when it is no longer required – an
even greater reason to ensure the
secure destruction of all important
documents. .
It’s important also to consider
the type of media to be destroyed,
confidential information is often not
only recorded on paper, but also in other
forms, particularly electronic media such
as CDs, DVDs and floppy disks.
The IDEAL shredder range addresses
this – the CD Shredder shreds a single
Research commissioned by Fellowes
revealed that consumer confidence is at an
all time low, with 96% of people concerned
that the organisations they deal with aren’t
treating their data responsibly.
The study found that just 52% of
companies have a policy in place to help
protect people’s identities. More than three-
quarters of employees polled admit the
identities of employees or customers could
be at risk of being acquired by fraudsters and
42% of British workers believe employee or
customer identities could be obtained from
company bins.
And it’s not only at the office that there
are risks. The growth in remote working is
making employees more vulnerable to identity
theft outside the office. Fellowes found that
67% of employees work from a non-office
location from time to time. Disturbingly, 39%
of these don’t shred at all, meaning that the
office practices aren’t extending to all work
and documents and confidential company
information is being discarded intact.
