atmosphere, the equivalent emissions
saving of taking 23,500 average cars of
the road each year,” says Cassidy.
In October last year, as a corporate
partner of theWoodland Trust, The
Premier Paper Group (www.paper.co.uk)
signed up to the UKWoodland Carbon
Code. This programme sets a new standard
for carbon capture, removing it from the
atmosphere through the creation of native
woodland across the country.
Using guidelines and figures from The
Carbon Trust and DEFRA, Premier has
calculated the amount of CO2 the business
emits per tonne of paper sold.Working
with theWoodland Trust and its Woodland
Carbon scheme will enable Premier to
capture the CO2 from the distribution
of several popular paper ranges including
Evolution, Multicopy and ProDesign.
Premier Group Marketing Director
David Jones said, “Capturing CO2 through
theWoodland Carbon scheme offers a
unique opportunity for us to invest in
UK-based carbon projects and in particular,
it delivers tangible and visible results
which can be visited and enjoyed by our
customers, staff and the general public,
right across the country.”
And this month, Antalis McNaughton
(www.antalis.co.uk) announced a new
service to purchase CarbonNeutral
Certified Paper, which enables its
customers to offset the carbon dioxide
emissions associated with paper
production and distribution.
The scope of the certification includes
all the carbon dioxide emissions from
paper making and delivery through
Antalis McNaughton and onwards to its
customers.
Environment Manager Matthew Botfield
says that sustainability is a key challenge
for paper mills and merchants. “Increasing
customer demand has seen a rise in
paper brands looking for environmental
solutions that go beyond raw materials.
Going CarbonNeutral complements
existing accreditations and provides our
customers with a means to reduce their
carbon footprint to net zero, set stretching
reduction targets, enhance their brand and
maintain their competitive edge.”
Products now available with
CarbonNeutral certification include the
Image range of papers, 4CC, Data Copy and
Coloraction.
With customers actively looking to
differentiate themselves by improving
their environmental credentials,
international merchant group PaperlinX,
introduced its Carbon Balanced Paper
programme (www.carbonbalancedpaper.
com) back in June 2010.
Originally launched with Howard
Smith Paper Group, the programme is
now also available to Robert Horne Group
and PaperCo customers.
Put simply, Carbon Balanced is where
the CO2 emissions of products including
Revive, Hello, Advocate and Think4,
which are Pre-Paid Carbon Balanced
products, have been estimated and an
equivalent amount of carbon dioxide is
either prevented from being released, or is
absorbed from the atmosphere. Balancing is
facilitated by the ecological charity,World
Land Trust, who ensure that carbon impacts
are offset in the most effective way.
“Carbon Balanced Paper is an
exciting environmental initiative that
helps organisations directly reduce
the carbon impacts of their marketing
communications and meet their carbon
reduction objectives; simply through their
choice of paper,” says Marketing Manager
Paul Cassidy.
TheWorld Land Trust balances carbon
through the purchase of critical areas of
tropical rainforest that would otherwise
be deforested. Carbon that would
otherwise be released is locked and then
these standing forests continue to absorb
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Importantly, the ecological benefits
extend beyond simply carbon removal,
preserving endangered forests and the
flora and fauna they support.
All papers within the Carbon Balanced
Paper range have had their embedded
greenhouse gas emissions offset at
the point of sale. This means that the
emissions involved in the production
of this range of paper products have
been measured, with the assistance
of the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon
Management, experts in the field of
carbon footprinting.
“To date, the Carbon Balanced Paper
programme has preserved more than
1,930 acres of land with theWorld Land
Trust in projects focused in Ecuador. This
is the equivalent area of 964 football
pitches. It will remove more than 53,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide from the
Whilst the use of recycled
papers and/or those certified
with internationally recognised
environmental accreditations such as
Programme for the Endorsement of
Forest Certification (PEFC) and Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC), can help;
the UK’s paper merchants are taking
this one step further – providing
products with impressive green
credentials and initiatives that capture
or balance the carbon emissions
associated with paper’s manufacture
and use.
The 2008 UK Climate Change
Act, which set a UK target
of 80 per cent reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions
from 1990 levels, by the year
2050; has forced businesses
to focus on initiatives that
will help reduce their carbon
footprint.
