Premier Paper Group’s
commitment to
environmental protection
Through its sixteen regional branch
offices, Premier currently supplies
180,000 tonnes of paper a year to a
diverse customer base.
Using guidelines and figures from
The Carbon Trust and DEFRA, Premier
calculated the amount of CO2 the
business emits per tonne of paper sold
and over a year ago signed up to The
Woodland Trust’s UKWoodland Carbon
Code.
The UKWoodland Carbon Code
sets a new standard for carbon capture,
removing it from the atmosphere
through the creation of native
woodland right here in the UK. To date,
more than 50 of Premier’s customers
have signed up to its unique Carbon
Capture initiative, capturing more than
1,000 tonnes of CO2 from the air;
locking it securely away in the timber of
broadleaved trees.
As a corporate partner of the
woodland conservation charity, Premier
committed to capture the CO2 from
the distribution of several of its
popular office paper ranges including
Evolution,
MultiCopy
and
ProDesign,
in a bid to
reduce its
own and its customers’ environmental
impact.
“Capturing carbon through The
Woodland Trust’s UKWoodland Carbon
Code offers a unique opportunity for
us and our customers to invest in UK-
based carbon projects,” says Premier
Group Marketing Director David Jones.
It is estimated that 25 square metres
of native British woodland captures and
locks up one tonne of CO2.
“The fact that trees are planted in
the UK is a compelling proposition as
it delivers tangible and visible results,
which can be visited and enjoyed by our
customers, staff and the general public,
right across the country.”
As part of a national plan by the
Woodland Trust to double the UK’s
woodland cover, which is currently
one of the lowest in Europe, Premier’s
contributions have supported the
planting of 160 hectares of native
trees, including Ash, Aspen, Oak and
Rowan, at the Defence Training
Estate at Warcop in Cumbria.
Warcop is one of a number
of theWoodland
Trust’s Carbon Removal
projects that comply with
the Government’s Woodland
Carbon Code.
Low-carbon economy
The Climate Change Act underpins
the UK’s transition to a low-carbon
economy. The UK has put in place the
most ambitious targets on greenhouse
gases of any developed country, pledging
to halve carbon dioxide emissions by
2025. The carbon budget is part of
efforts to meet legally binding emissions
cuts of 80% by 2050 and will put the
UK on target for 60% cuts by 2030.
In addition, legislation that came into
force in April 2013 made it compulsory
for companies listed in the Main Market
of the London Stock Exchange to
include emissions data for their entire
organisation in their annual reports.
This means that carbon reduction
and limiting the environmental impact
of their operations forms an even more
important part of many organisations’
Corporate Social Responsibility policies.
In order to support its customers
in meeting these key business
objectives, Premier is providing a
unique opportunity to capture the CO2
emissions from the manufacture and
distribution of their paper purchases and
to invest in UK-based carbon projects.
“We recognise that environmental
issues are becoming more and more
important to organisations of all sizes
and, as a supplier of a product which
traditionally has impeccable green
credentials, we are committed to
doing as much as we can to support
our customers in meeting key business
objectives,” says Jones.
The Premier Paper Group, the UK’s largest independent paper merchant, in
partnership with theWoodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation
charity, is helping its customers to meet both carbon reduction and CSR objectives.
