PAPER
£70 billion of savings
come at a price
Two Sides, an initiative by companies
from the graphic communication
value chain, promotes the
responsible production and use of
print and paper, dispelling common
environmental misconceptions
by providing users with verifiable
information on why print and
paper is an attractive, practical
and sustainable communications
medium.
The Policy Exchange report
Smarter,
Better, Faster, Stronger
published
on September 2 claims that the
Government could save as much as
£70 billion by 2020 if it adopts plans
to eliminate paper and digitise its
activities.
In the report, Policy Exchange argues
for a full Government transformation to
digital technologies which will close the
gap in productivity between the public
and private sectors.
The report claims: ‘More than
eight in ten people in the UK use the
internet and nearly six in ten own a
smartphone’. Therefore, ‘Government
should eliminate paper for interactions
within and between departments and
switch exclusively to digital channels for
public services that do not need a face-
to-face interaction with the public’.
Two Sides urgently advises that
policy makers and influencers keep
consumer choice uppermost when
considering future communication
strategies and focus more on ‘digital
where demanded’ rather than ‘digital by
default’.
Findings from a recent Two Sides
survey show that consumers wish
to retain the flexibility of postal and
electronic communications: 89% of
consumers want to be able to switch
between paper and online without
difficulty and cost; 48% believe that
postal bills offer more security; and 46%
say bills and statements are easier to
read on paper than off a screen’.
In the opinion of Two Sides, the
report appears to ignore the clear
choice that consumers express for
paper-based media for many types
of documentation and the needs of
millions of citizens without digital
access.

A new report claiming that the Government is wasting
billions of pounds by relying on paper-based documentation
in public services has been challenged by Two Sides.
Catwalk fashion
More than 200 suppliers to the Royal Family
exhibited in the gardens of Buckingham Palace
from 11 to 14 July for the Coronation Festival,
which was organised by the Royal Warrant
Holders Association to celebrate British heritage
and service to the Royal Households.
Paper merchant and Royal Warrant holder
Talk Paper showcased its Conqueror range, which
doubled up as haute couture at the event’s
catwalk show; models wore origami creations
constructed entirely from Conqueror paper.
The paper was turned into a series of dresses
designed by up-and-coming British designer
Joey Bevan. The elaborate paper dresses
were created from Conqueror Golden Haze
Pearlescent, which was used to produce paper
lace and roses. The range of paper thicknesses
and sizes enabled the designer to create both
softly flowing and structural, voluminous
sections, while the pearl sheen of the paper
gave the dresses a luxurious appearance.
