An independent review commissioned by the Prime Minister
has found that around 300,000 people are leaving their jobs
each year due to mental illness, costing employers up to £42
billion annually.
The report,
Thriving at Work: a review of mental health and
employers,
sets out 40 recommendations for organisations of
all sizes, providing a framework for workplace mental health.
These include routinely monitoring employee mental health and
wellbeing, encouraging open conversations about mental health,
and providing employees with good working conditions.
Working conditions undoubtedly have a massive impact on
workers’ health, state of mind and ability to work productively.
Open plan offices were once hailed as hives of creativity that
encourage communication and collaboration, but many have
found the resulting noise and lack of privacy more of a hindrance
than help. The office design feature on page 26 highlights
how this trend, if done wrong, can actually be detrimental to
productivity and wellbeing.
Sometimes a change of scenery can improve your focus and
productivity, something Bianca Bass of co-working company
LABS knows well. In our interview on page 22, she discusses the
shift away from the traditional office and how flexibility is the
key to helping workers and businesses flourish.
It seems businesses must find the balance between offering staff
support when needed, alongside the autonomy to work in a way
that’s most conducive to good work and good health.
