Vivitek has expanded the
capabilities of its Qumi HD LED
pocket projectors by bringing out
a wireless dongle and battery
dock. TheWi-Fi USB dongle offers
data rates of up to 150Mbps, is
WPS compatible and supports
64/128-bit WEP,WPA,WPA2
encryption. The £105 snap-on
battery dock is fully portable and
offers a convenient, on-the-spot,
mains-free power source. It has
enough power to project at 50
lumens for one and a half hours.
Projectors
Philips’ range of pocket and pico
projectors are carrying all before them
as they continue to take an ever larger
share of this fast growing segment
of the projector market. According to
GFK, in March 2012 Philips had a 54%
share (by value) of the sub-0.5kg, sub-
200 Lumens projector market, making
it the leading player for the sixth
month in a row.
Following market growth of more than
170% in 2011, sales of pocket projectors
are continuing to rise this year: sales in
March 2012 were 23% higher (by value)
than in the same period last year.
Philips says demand for its PicoPix
projectors is being driven by early adopters
who like to share digital content stored on
laptops, cameras, smartphones, iPads and
gaming consoles, as well as by business
users who want a simple way to share
Pocket projectors are not the
only devices that can turn a
small space into a meeting room.
This is also a benefit of short-
throw projectors that are able
to project large images even
when placed just inches from the
projection surface.
With an interesting upright
design, the Ricoh PJ WX4130 /
PJ WX4130N can be placed less
than 5in from the projection
surface and still display a 48in
image.When placed 9.6 inches
from the wall, it can project an
image of up to 80 inches in size
(larger sizes can be created by
combining multiple units and
using edge-blending software).
Image resolutions up to
WXGA (1280-x-800) and 2500
Lumens output means there is
no compromise in performance,
unlike pocket projectors.
There is also a good choice of
connectivity including HDMI
for connecting DVD and Blu-ray
players, DVI and USB.
The network version, the
PJ WX4130N, which includes
wireless connectivity, enables
presentations to be made from an
iPad. A Ricoh Presenter app allows
a presentation on an iPad to be
wirelessly shared with up to 10
other tablets on the same network.
Short-throw projectors are
particularly useful for interactive
presentations, as their closeness
to the projection surface ensures
the presenter isn’t blinded by
glare from the lamp; eliminates
the problem of shadows falling
across the projection surface; and
removes the distraction of a having
a noisy projector in the middle of
a meeting room table. A carrying
case and low weight of 3kg makes
the compact, upright Ricoh PJ
WX4130/PJ WX4130N easy to
move from room to room.

Meetings a waste of time
Move closer
Time wasted in meetings is
costing the UK economy £26
billion, according to Epson-
sponsored research by the
Centre for Economics and
Business Research (cebr) and
Opinion Matters.
An Opinion Matters survey of
1,000 office workers found that
more than half the 4 hours per
week each spends in meetings
is wasted (2 hrs, 39 minutes),
of which an average of 1hr, 50
minutes is made up later, leaving
49 minutes lost. This, says Epson,
equates to 13 million hours lost
per week in 2011 alone. Epson and
cebr have calculated that if this
time was used more productively,
it would have led to a 1.7%
increase in GDP.
The biggest time-wasters were
repetition of information, lack
of focus amongst attendees and
unstructured agendas. The survey
found that one in five senior
managers spends 10 hours or
more in meetings each week, but
that, on average, it takes just 11
minutes for people’s concentration
to drift in meetings.
Technology can also be a
hindrance, with 16% of respondents
citing technical failures as a cause
of lost time in meetings: two thirds
(68%) said they found it distracting
when others used tablets,
smartphones or laptops during
meetings; and nearly half (41%)
admit to using a tablet, laptop or
smartphone in meetings for non-
work-related purposes.
business presentations, visuals, photos and
videos in one-to-one or small meetings.
One of the best models for business
use is the Philips PicoPix 2480, a palm-
sized, multimedia projector that connects
to pretty much anything. It comes with
a VGA cable for a laptop or notebook; a
USB cable for connecting a USB stick or
USB hard drive; an A/V component cable
for a camera, video camera or portable
games console; and an AV cable to connect
an iPhone, iPad or iPod. Alternatively,
you can used the PPX2480 on its own to
display material stored on the built-in 2GB
memory or removable memory cards.
The PPX2480 can project images up to
120in (diagonal) – so much bigger than
your average TV – but the main benefit is
its portability. Measuring just 10 x 5 x 2cm
and weighing only 130g, it is small enough
to pack into a laptop bag or ruck-sack and

take with you on your travels. It even has
its own carry case.
Other useful features are a 1w built-in
speaker, plus connections for a headset or
travel speaker, and a battery life of two
hours.
The PPX2480 is one of eight models in
Philips’ range, which also includes the tiny
USB-powered PPX2055 and the PPX2330,
now on sale in BA’s High Life Shop on long
haul and non-EU flights. This pocket-
sized projector has the convenience of a
permanently connected USB QuickLink
plug and socket and integrated MP4 player.
