01732 759725 AND FINALLY Nirav Patel, Director, World Wide Field Marketing, Nuance Document Imaging 60 seconds with… 50 What’s currently having the greatest impact on your business? The need to increase security related to information management processes and devices. Threats from hackers, malware, and even physical security, is something that is top of mind for our customers, we’ve been helping them ensure that their business processes are as secure as they can be. Then, we have GDPR coming in to force in May which we’ve seen many organisations struggle to address. Our customers want to talk to us about how Nuance solutions can aid in their compliance. Where do you see the next big opportunity? True workflow centric solutions. The term ‘workflow’ can be a bit ambiguous, but, what Nuance means by the term is being able to use one software solution, across single or multiple business processes, to effect a more secure, integrated, and efficient outcome. This software solution should be capable of either being hosted on-premise or in the cloud – it should always be the customer’s choice. I can’t really say too much in detail right now, but, Nuance will be making some very exciting announcements in this area this year. What would make your day job easier? Some kind of magical time zone altering device! I’m based in the UK but have a worldwide responsibility; with members of my team located in different areas of the USA, and as far afield as Australia, it leads to meetings at some strange hours! What’s the best bit of business advice you’ve been given? A great mentor once told me, ‘make everything in business personal, and take everything personally’. Whether working on a project, or dealing with a colleague, team member, customer, or partner, it is important to make a personal connection, and bring a personal touch to everything we do. It makes all interactions more human, and it extends to the way I run my team too – I am personally invested in their success, I care about their wellbeing, their own personal lives, interests, etc. It has served me very well, and I have no plans to change my approach. If you had had a crystal ball, would you have done anything differently? Perhaps continued my passion for playing cricket, as well as watching! Joking aside, not a thing. I believe that everything we do, and what that ultimately results in, is what defines us, and therefore, I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done. Describe your most embarrassing moment. I think it’s probably when I worked at Samsung. We had gone to Seoul to visit the HQ and it was a very hot day, unusually for August in Seoul, it was touching 30C. We had to be at our HQ building for a midday presentation to some of the senior management, and we got there in plenty of time, however, as you may be able to imagine, the security processes for entering the HQ were pretty stringent, so, in the end we were rushing to make sure we got to the right floor and meeting room in time. Cutting a long story short, by the time we got there, everyone was assembled and we were asked to kick off immediately – suffice to say, this was an important presentation, and I had to do it while drenched in sweat, I’m bald too, so it quite literally looked like I’d jumped in to a swimming pool in my suit, got out, and started to do a presentation! What was your first job? A paper round, but, my first ‘proper’ job was as a salesman at Curry’s (part of DSG Retail). I worked there from the age of 16, all the way through to my final year of university. What would be your dream job? I guess a lot of people answer this, but, I’ve got to say as one of the presenters of either The Grand Tour, or Top Gear. Fine dining and good wine, or curry and a pint? Both! If I’m only allowed to pick one though, it would have to be fine dining and good wine. Money’s not an issue, what’s your perfect car… and where would you like to drive it? The Mercedes AMG Project One Hypercar! Regardless of the car, my favourite driving road is the Stelvio Pass in Italy. Favourite holiday destination. Very easy, Italy! The weather, food, wine, history, people, and stunning natural beauty of places such as the Amalfi Coast make it a winner. How do you like to spend your spare time? I pretty much dedicate every bit of spare time I have to my family; I have a beautiful wife and an even more beautiful 10 year old daughter. Photo: Mercedes-AMG
