Mobile printing is definitely a
growing area. According to survey
findings from IDC (www.idc.com),
39 per cent of respondents say they
travel for work, which represents a
large and evolving workforce that
has new requirements for print.
Those who travel clearly need to
print and the IDC study found that
moderate travel is most associated
with increasing print volume. The
research also found that 52 per cent
of respondents who use smartphones
for work said they cannot currently
print from their device, but want to.
In order to address this requirement,
EFI has expanded its range of mobile
printing solutions with a new self-serve
print station for print providers and a new
version of its wireless, driverless mobile
printing software for enterprises.
EFI PrintMe Mobile, winner of the
Editors Choice Award in the Autumn 2012
issue of
Print.IT
is the only enterprise
software solution that enables direct Wi-Fi
printing from iPads, iPhones and Android
devices, from within the application, to all
networked printers, regardless of brand.
And version 2.2 comes with new features
that give enterprise IT departments more
control over printing from mobile devices.
“PrintMe Mobile leverages more than
a decade of mobile printing innovation
to provide a solution that enterprise
customers need today. We are removing the
barriers to mobile printing and letting users
print when they want to from whatever
device they have,” said John Henze,
Vice President of Fiery marketing for EFI.
Accountability
In particular, it enables IT departments to
account for all printing from mobile devices
through integration with leading job
accounting applications such as Equitrac
and PaperCut; to implement policies to
control printer access based on a user ID
and, where appropriate, integration with
a corporate LDAP server. It also enables IT
professionals to create and enforce policies
to control which printers can be used and
what types of printing options are available
(black/white or colour, stapling, advanced
finishing, etc.) for each user or group of
users.
Chris Dance, CEO of PaperCut Software,
said: “The explosion of tablets in the
enterprise has created a serious challenge
to tracking, managing and reporting print
jobs. The standard AirPrint print job is
anonymous and does not provide a way
for companies to track who printed it.
With PrintMe Mobile working together
with PaperCut, companies can now
bring mobile printing in line with their
job accounting rules in order to properly
account for print activity.”
Another useful feature for organisations
that have highly sensitive content or tight
restrictions on information leaving the
company network is secure printing. Users
can send print jobs from anywhere to an
internal print queue and release the print
using their mobile device once they are
standing at a printer.
Self-serve option
EFI has also enhanced its mobile printing
offering for print service providers, such
as schools, colleges and libraries, with a
cashless self-serve print station that allows
students and other customers to print from
mobile phones, iPads, USB drives and cloud
accounts (e.g. GoogleDrive, Dropbox and
EFI PrintMe) and pay for prints using a
credit card, campus card or cash card.
Commenting on the launch of the
M500 Self-serve Copy and Print Station,
Henze said: “Antiquated devices like
coin-operated copiers are not meeting
their printing needs and create cash
management headaches for university staff.
EFI’s M500 station provides the easiest
way for users to access, pay and print in a
completely self-serve environment.”
The M500 station features a large 10-
inch colour touch screen; provides secure
encrypted communications; integrates
with campus card and billing systems; and
works with any PostScript printer or MFP. It
also supports 1D/2D barcode scanning for
mobile devices and discount cards.
