In July 2012, Duplo International
announced it was to become the
official UK distributor for the
Fastback range of desktop binding
machines. The simple table-top
machines bind loose sheets into
presentable documents using
thermally activated binding strips.
The technology is 3.5 times faster
than a conventional punch and bind
system and produces documents that
lay completely flat, are suitable for
posting and at the end of their useful
life are fully recyclable.
Duplo’s Marketing Manager Marc
Legge said that the Fastback 20 is arguably
the fastest and most versatile document
binding machine on the market today.
“At about the same size as a regular wire-
binding machine, the Fastback 20 is highly
compact and yet capable of six distinct
binding styles including paperback and
hardcover style books.”
Duplo stocks a comprehensive range of
the patented thermal strips needed to bind
pages together. The binding strips come
in three size options and make it possible
to bind anything from a few sheets to
350-page documents in about 30 seconds.
They are made of different materials and
available in 16 eye-catching colours to
suit any corporate guidelines. In addition,
customers can order strips branded with
their own graphics, images and logos to
make their documents really stand out.
A significant advantage of Fastback 20
over alternative binding technologies is its
speed and simplicity.
“There is no need to punch the sheets
so it is possible to take a document of
350-pages directly from the printer, place it
into the machine and complete the bind in
less than half-a-minute. Bound documents
can lie completely flat for a full read across
and have a bound strength of 50lbs,” said
Legge.
”It is quite incredible, the paper tears
long before the bind ever gives way.”
An additional benefit is that because
they lie so flat Fastback documents, unlike
alternative binding methods, won't tear
envelopes when sent in the post.
Ease of use
Duplo also highlighted the simplicity of
the machine as a big benefit over more
conventional binders. “The machine
automatically detects the strip you’ve
inserted and optimises the binding to suit,”
explained Legge. “If you insert a strip that
is too small or too large, it rejects it and
asks you for the correct size.”
The full colour display also helps by
guiding the user in real-time telling them
what to do at each stage. “It walks you
through the process step-by-step. It just
won’t bind until the paper is in the right
place and you insert
the correct strip,” said
Legge.

If versatility, ease of use and simplicity
were not enough, the Fastback also
shines when it comes to environmental
sensitivity. Fastback bound documents can
be put straight into the paper recycling bin
at their end of their useful life because the
binding strips are recycle-friendly.
For lower volume users, the Fastback
9 is a cost-effective alternative to the 20.
Whilst it has fewer binding styles than
the 20, it is still approximately three times
faster than alternative binding methods
and shares all the benefits of user-
friendliness, sustainability and reliability
with the Fastback 20.
Duplo sells the Fastback
20 via a nationwide
network of approved
dealers who can offer local
demonstrations and after
sales support.
